In Short – This tranquil, modern and friendly Indian restaurant is sought for its gourmet lunchtime buffet, offered daily for $12 per person. Ingredients are organic, fresh and seasonal, and presentation is sophisticated and expertly clean. Decor is spare and soothing, with contemporary furnishings and very little to distract from the food itself, which makes for good quieter dining and dates (and, along with the food, is what sets it apart from more casual Indian spots nearby). Dinner entrees include dosas; fresh naan comes straight from the oven.
Review of Sultan, Indian Restaurant (not far from Macys'.)

Sultan is a very good Indian Restaurant. I do not agree with the reviewer who dissed it vehemently. Don't forget that the chain of Nan and Curries are everywhere including right next door. Sultans' food is much better than theirs, though, (I do like the one on Irving Street in the Sunset- It is ok- their chai is the best. ) Sultans' chef is original and talented, her food is unique and I recommend you try it. At the lunch buffet they have wonderful salads and fresh veggies which are nearly impossible to get at an Indian restaurant. Most Indian Restaurants overcook the vegetables until they are mush and bathe them in oil. Also the decor is understated but classy in a relaxed way. My friend goes there at least once a week and he is Indian.
- Pros: Nice atmosphere, different dishes, fresh ingredients, less oil
- Cons: It's right next door to an Indian chain of restaurants who are cheap and rude in SF.

With an Indian restaurant on every corner in SF, I was strongly dissapointed that this is the one I walked into. The review states that the restaurant is "spare". I thought they just opened yesterday! the only thing in the restaurant is tables-that's it! Which can look sleek and sophisticated if done right. The food sucked. The daal had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. My husband's chicken was rubbery. And the service was horrible too. We asked if we could have a booth, there were SEVERAL available but he stuttered that they were reserved...no one came-he clearly wanted people to sit in the middle of the dining room so that it looked busy to passersby. We sat looking bored at our food for a very long time before I had to flag someone down for our check...had I not done so I can guarantee they would have let us sit for another half an hour before bringing it. Definitely try somewhere other than this place!
