What People Are Saying About Pot De Pho

Like the burrito, pho soup is one of those foods that resists the fancy treatment—why pay more for a food that has reached taste-perfection at $6? At Pot de Pho, where the eponymous noodle soup costs just a little more, Chef Khai Duong (also head chef of Ana Mandara) has found a convincing response. First, while many of those six-buck pho joints range from cheerless to borderline unhygienic, this high-ceilinged, immaculate space, adorned with wooden birdcages and a 1960s-era pho street cart, is comfortable and feels like a proper restaurant. More importantly, the pho here is MSG-free, the…

Photastic

Best Pho in the city - the freshest and friendliest Pho house in San Francisco. It costs twice as much as your average Pho house, but its at least 3 times better. I have had every item on the menu, Pho and non-Pho, meat and vegan, and there is no weak item on the menu. The vegan items are as flavorful as the meat dishes, including the Pho. The service is attentive and always very friendly, but could still be improved. Excellent beverages including a wine list that is about half price of what it should be and great beers and tea. For the price, you will find it hard to beat the value of this great restaurant.

  • Pros: Excellent Food, wine list and warm friendly environment.
  • Cons: The bar is not as robust as it could be.

Best Pho Ever - Not too big - but in a class of its own

55 stars.

Best Pho Ever...

I love Pho. I'm always lookin for the pho place with the best meat & broth.

I've dreamed of opening a gourmet pho place that used no MSG and high quality meats. A place that not only had pho but a pleasant and stylish environment.

I found it !! Yeah! I don't have to open my own restaurant!

This place does for pho what place's like Delphina do for Italian food.

A word of caution: If what makes you happy is large portions at low cost this place is not for you. They emphasize quality, and yummyness not quantity. Quality costs a little more too.. just a couple bucks more.

A call to SF foodies, Slow Foodies, lovers of organic food: It seems a lot of people who eat pho for the huge servings and supper low cost are rating not so well. This place is a gem and unique among the many many Pho places I?ve been. If you go and like it go online to yelp and other places and I give them a good review.

Overpriced, Not-Authentic, Rude & Slow Service

by sugargirlj

Worst pho experience and I've had pho at least a dozen times, plus my dining companion practically grew up on the stuff in San Jose. Non-authentic for sure, extremely small portions (my rare beef pho had two small pieces of beef and loads and loads of noodles), and downright rude and neglectful service.

We ate lunch there, two people, ordered the shrimp pancake and 2 rare beef phos. Shrimp pancake was the diameter of a tennis ball and not much filling. Pho was tiny. And instead of serving pho with lime, mint, plum sauce and a spicy sauce, it was served with green leaf lettuce and lime. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of putting lettuce in a hot soup. No hot sauce until we asked, and they said they did not have mint or plum sauce for the pho.

We had to ask our server three times for water, and finally resorted to asking someone else, and of course our waters were never refilled even after asking. Similarly, our tea took 15 minutes to get to us, after our starter was done. I don't think we saw one server ever smile or say thank you to anyone, and they furthermore did not seem to be friendly amongst themselves. Their credit card machine was down so we had to pay cash which we were only told of at the end of our meal. Another table had to leave to visit an ATM.

2 phos, one app, one tea, $25 each and we left famished and extremely dissatisfied. Definitely do not recommend. Won't be returning either.

The Details on Pot De Pho

Know Before You Go:

You can choose your size of soup bowl, but sizes here are not as overwhelming as most traditional pho restaurants.

Look Good:

Do not pronounce pho like foe. Instead, try saying it "fuh," but with an upward question-like intonation at the end.

The Extras:

Pot de Pho also has plenty of non-soup options: Try the Ca Kho To, a caramelized basa fish that arrives in a cast-iron skillet and is the restaurant's second most popular dish.

Parking:

There is plenty of easy street parking on Geary.

On the Menu:

Animal lover? There's also a (relatively) tasty vegan pho on the menu.
