The Scene
The spacious eatery, with its big windows and corner location, features two dimly lit rooms with a well-stocked central tequila bar as ahighlight. Art Deco paintings grace the burnt-orange walls. Wait staff are personable and, though their service can be scattered, are very persistent, sometimes at the diners' expense.
The Food
Mexican and Spanish influences dominate the menu with the occasional drop-ins of a warm French ratatouille-goat cheese salad or an Italian mushroom ravioli with truffle cream sauce. Each entree comes with a copious amount of sides, leaving little room for artistic presentation, let alone appetizers. The annatto braised pork exhibits plenty of tart and flavorful red-chili juices. Standouts include pan-fried plantains and melt-in-your-mouth-tender short ribs with chanterelle mushrooms and ancho pepper jus. fs22The scallops, however moist, still leave much room for improvement, and they're an odd accompaniment to the heaping scoop of preserved-lemon mashed potatoes.
Hits: Those seeking a low-key experience will be pleased to find they have the bar all to themselves.
Misses: Service is hospitable but pushy--make sure to ask if they'll charge for wine offered as a tasting.

What to DrinkMargaritas are crafted with housemade sweet-and-sour and a selection from a list of 25-plus brands of high-end tequila. The Granadita made with pomegranate infused tequila and Pom juice is a sweet alternative to the stiffer Blue Agave made with Sauza Hornitos and Blue Curacao.

When we walked up, the place was pretty empty. Nonetheless, we walked in and had an amazing meal. We tried the tapas(cervice), salad (warm goat cheese) and entrees (skirt steak and scallions), and it was fantastic. Licking-the-plate fantastic.
Pros: Tequillas, tapas, salads, main courses
Cons: I can only eat and drink so much.....

Cava22 is part of the new restaurants, and bars sprouting up in the MIssion, along with Lolo, Rev cafe etc. Fun place for a group dinner, dimly lit, party atmosphere..good tequila and decent food. Great for a night out with friends.
