Editorial Review for Bin 38 – by Joanna Currier
The Scene
The nonstop party at this sophisticated Marina District wine bar begins in the far back on the heated, outdoor patio, travels through the cozy nooks and standing-room-only areas of the appealing main room and ends at the front at a small, smart bar packed with attractive oenophiles. Warm woods and textiles--velvets, plush cushions, smooth and appealing surfaces--add comfort and heat to the scene. Servers do their best to push through the crowds (tough it's sometimes hard to forgive them other missteps if you're sitting down to dine).
The Food
Though tasty, the Mediterranean-inflected Californian food here is not quite the focus--it merely serves as a pleasant complement to the international New World wine list (45 by the glass) and opportunity for face time. Popular small plates include the crispy french fries with harissa aioli, "butcher's plate" of outsourced salumi, artisan cheese plate and heartier dishes such as mussels and grilled shrimp and beef tenderloin. Do take advantageof the pairings, suggested for each dish on the menu: The wines and artisanal beers mentioned are well chosen, and some combinations are stunning.
Hits: One of the finest and most surprising pairings ever suggested on a menu--Abita Purple Haze beer and éclairs.
Misses: "Like, I'm not sure what kinds of cheeses these are, but enjoy!"

Bin 38 has become my neighborhood watering hole, since i live just a block or so away. The place is always busy, full of people having fun. Sunday brunch is great, wine is great, owners are SO nice & friendly, apps are great.
Pros: Great wine selection, outdoor seating in front & back, great appetizers
Cons: Limited entree selection, somewhat weird dinner hours (i.e., no dinner on Sunday)

We went to Bin 38 on Saturday night. What a spot! Great wines to choose from and super spot to hang with friends and meet new people. Very good crowd that offers both seating inside and outside on the patio. If you have more than 4 in your group, I'd call ahead and reserve a table or couch. We stood for awhile until a table became available. Try the Fort Ross- very good.
