Editorial Review for Harlot – by David MacFadden-Elliott
In Short
In the shadow of the Trans-Bay terminal, Harlot stands as a monument to the Barbary Coast's ladies of the evening that prowled the same alleyway that the club stands upon today. Stylized branches and antlers contrasted by red light bulbs and tasteful, nearly nude artwork are focal points of the seductive décor. Dressed-up women appreciate the danceable DJ music, while their under-dressed male counterparts appreciate the upscale bar snacks and the pin-ups on tabletops more. Those in the skybox (a floating VIP bar) enjoy their own bar and bathroom.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThere's often a line outside on weekends, but ladies usually don't have to wait for too long. Guys are best advised not to travel in same-sex packs--the door staff, while polite and professional, are unlikely to allow large groups of guys in together.
Where to SitIf you know someone, or call someone, you can escape the elbowing at the downstairs bar and relax in the VIP area.
Save MoneyTo avoid the cover charge, dig the scene after work. Stop by between 5pm and 9pm for $3 drafts and $5 wells.
Fun FactMost of SoMa's alleyways, including the club's own Minna Street, are named after infamous prostitutes from the Gold Rush era.

I was there 2 times on a thursday night and had a great time. Got in at around 9:30PM and did not have to wait to get in. The bar tenders are doing a great job, I find them very friendly and it is easy to get drinks even when it is a little packed. Prices are very reasonable too (relatively speaking). It really does not get much better than this when it comes to the music. It starts out with great downtempo like OM lounge, Thievery corp etc. Later in the night the music speeds up and the dance floor is packed. The DJ's know what they are doing, that's for sure. I find the crowd approachable and friendly compared to other clubs. Most of the people appear to be in their late 20's to early 30's. Last, but not least, the decor is very cool and stylish.
Pros: Extremely good music
Cons: The upstairs area can get sometimes a little too crowded

Over-rated night spot tainted with bouncers that feed off of doorman power. Let me and my beautiful friends in, but gave trouble to the second half of my friend's birthday party. Attention-hungry and passive-agressive wanna-be-trendy bouncer said to my male friends, "You can stand here all night and you won't get in." Meanwhile 75% of our group was already inside with the rest of the rude staff. Entrance is purely superficial, and depends solely on the mood and rules of the doormen at that given moment. Overheard several other groups complaining in line as well. And let me tell you, it was pretty empty inside...
