Outstanding authentic Italian cuisine in downtown San Francisco.
I have eaten at Chiaroscuro on several occasions and have always found the food exceptionally good and the service impeccable. The menu changes frequently so it is always nice to find out what is new. The pastas are delicious and there are always great variations, like the paper thin lasagna with various fillings. I also like their choice of desert and the chocolate souffle is to die for.
The service is always great. The waiters are attentive and friendly. I feel really well taken care of when I stop by for dinner. The decor is also unusual and very appealing with an interesting contrast between the concrete interior and the warm candle lights. Just a great place to have a delicious and fairly priced dinner!
A new twist to Italian Food!!. I originally went to this restaurant on the hotels concierge recommendation. II now take everyone who visits SFO to this restaurant. It was the best suggestion ever given! The detail to service is impeccable.You can sit there and just observe the staff and note how they turn dinner into a dining experience! The waiters know every last detail of the menu and the ingredients of each item. The support staff is just as great. We were seated with a view of the the kitchen and the staff there were non stop. The sun dried tomato stacked lasagna was incredibe. You have to try their carpaccio and rosemary matchstik fries. The staff creates a great ambiance. They have great background music and the candles surrounding the seating area set the perfect mood. It does get a bit loud as it is a small place, but have a glass of italian wine and enjoy!
Go here!. I?ve been here before and each time, I have had a very pleasant dining experience. On top of that, did you know this restaurant is teaming up with StreetSmart4kids? It?s actually really cool what they?re doing. I just heard about how SS4K is a nonprofit organization that helps underprivileged teens stay healthy. They are running their ?Dine Out and Donate? campaign here (as well as approx. 70 other restaurants in SF) during October and early November. After having a fabulous dining experience, just fill out the donation form when paying the check (minimum donation $3). This is perfect for people like me, who love to eat out all the time and also like to give back to the community. Check it out for yourself on the StreetSmart4Kids website!
New restaurant feel.
I have to admit the food here was pretty delicious... the pasta tasted very fresh [I order the trilogia] and the carbonara was sooo creamy and melted in my mouth. the desserts [moouse and cream puffs] were really really good also. the coffee was just ok. we were told the owner is from Rome so I'm assuming the tiny portions are because they are what they are, "normal portions" that we are suppose to eat. So don't be completely shocked when you end up with the tiniest plate of past you have ever seen. Just be sure to eat the bread/focaccia and/or soup before hand. The sandwiches [from another table] looked like normal American size portions. The service was pretty bad. The waitress too soft spoken, didn't check on us very often, somewhat disorganized (but I could see when I went to the restroom that she pretty much did everything in the back and seemed to be the only waitress in the whole restaurant besides the busboy). She never asked what drinks we wanted... we waited at least 30 minutes for our pastas and they were room temperature, our coffee was brought WAY after we finished our desserts (no exaggeration) and the decor was plan which is fine but the chairs were simple saloon chairs and our butts hurt after sitting through our two hour lunch.
It was just an OK experience. Great food though. Just need to fine tune the service.
A delightful find!. Chiaroscuro is a delightful new find. I went there the first time and didn't know what to expect. For appetizers we had fritos misto. The batter was light and cooked lightly with no oily residue. The polenta fries included with my shrimp dish are astounding! Always make sure you get a side when you eat here. On my next visit I had the wonderful heirloom tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella salad lightly seasoned with a balsamic vinagrette. I had a frittata sandwich with more wonderful polenta fries. The owner is a lot of fun and a firt and will make you feel at home. Enjoy a pleasant meal at Chiaroscuro.
I will eat here again... SOON!!!. I had dinner at this restaurant last night. It's like no other Italian restaurant I have ever been in. Very modern, definitely a nice change from the North Beach environment. The staff was so welcoming, I was promptly seated, my server was very attentive, even though the restuarant was quite full. The food, WOW... the food... I started with the bruschetta. There were six renditions of bruschetta that I have never tried. The plate was presented nicely and the antipasti was excellent. I spoke to my server and he explained that If I were to ever take a trip to Rome, this is how the bruschetta would be. So long to the normal tomatoes, basil and oil on toasted bread. Next I had the trilogia. This is the dish with three pasta samplings. It was another winner. Each pasta was so tasty. The fact the pasta is made in house definitely doesn't hurt. The food was so good, that I felt I had to try one of the main courses, although I was a bit full with what I had consumed thus far. I ordered the halibut... This was another plus for me. The fish was so juicy and paired with all the right items for a full main course. I couldn't quite bring myself to eat dessert, so I took a tiramisu to go. I had it for breakfast this morning and it was worth the wait. I highly recommend this place. The food is on point, the service is excellent also. I plan to re-visit soon

I have been to this restaurant three times over the past four months and have always enjoyed my experience there. I had dinner there with three friends, lunch on another occasion with five coworkers, and lunch again by myself.
The environment is modern, clean, light and airy ? lots of windows and an open kitchen.
Located in the charming Jackson Square neighborhood, it is a short walk from the Financial District, which makes it a very nice respite for a relaxed lunch.
Each time I dined there the service was attentive, friendly, efficient and unpretentious.
The food is terrific ? my favorites are the bruschetta appetizer, tagliolini with mussels and clams in a light tomato sauce (wonderful flavors and textures) and the pasta with eggplant and calamari (scrumptious). The mixed green salad is plentiful enough to be shared by two or three people.
An all-concrete interior and Roman food mark this small, big-budget restaurant at the foot of the Transamerica Pyramid..
The intimate dining room is made sculptural and design-rich with poured-concrete floors, walls and banquettes--topped, thankfully, with flat cushions--as well as lanterns reminiscent of Roman streetlights. A large exhibition kitchen dominates the back area. Do not expect lush, savory Italian preparations here--the food is simpler, with strong, earthy flavors. Greens are left undressed; meats are served blackened but very rare within. Expect the high prices that usually come with this particular piece of restaurant real estate

Chiaroscuro restaurant is a beautiful place where you can eat deliciuos food and is very italian food.
I eat with my friends a lot of kind of pasta and it was very very excellent.

Terrible service, over-crowded and just plain RUDE..
We arrived for an 8pm reservation on Valentines Day and waited 10 minutes with three other bewildered looking couples before I took initiative, found a waiter and asked about our reservation. After waiting another 15 minutes, the flustered waiter returned to tell us we had lost our reservation because WE were late?????
The atmosphere felt very cafeteria-like (a.k.a. NOISY!!!), ventilation was VERY poor, so place positively REEKED of fish and was stuffy.
Being turned away after making reservations well in advance because the business is disorganized on a major "couples" evening does not a good restaurant make. I DO NOT recommend this place to ANYONE looking for an nice, intimate, well-serviced place to have dinner. Go to Grand Cafe at the hotel Monaco, Tadich Grill or another place where there tends to be crowds BUT the service at THESE PLACES is top drawer.
