My favorite place to Karaoke is the Mint on Market Street. The gay-friendly crowd is always festive and fabulous and encouraging. I leave feeling positive and with new found friends!
Worth a stop by unless you have somewhere good to go!.
I cant say this is the best place in the city but It's far from the worst.
I agree that the D.J. is stuck on regular customers. My be he knows who tips
regulary large.
P.S. You may not like him but he made some great movies you can find
at the nearest book store.

I went there last night and it appears they have changed to allow more people a chance to sing.
P.S. I didnt mean to be hard on Frank because when hes not at work hes a real sweet person.
and that remark I made abou his movies I should add ( he was forced to make them )
The Mint Rocks. I've thrown two birthday parties at the Mint and had a blast both times. The reservation of tables for my party was free. I didn't get the impression that the KJ's were focused on their tips, nor did they show favoritism. They were most aware of the songs requested and whether they perceived them to be crowd pleasers. If you are choosing songs outside of the pop genre, it may take longer for your number to come up. A tip never hurt, but I don't think that is the KJ's primary motivation for who he/she calls to the stage. I was impressed with the diverse crowd and overall vibe at the Mint. You don't have to be Aretha Franklin to sing at this bar and feel the love. We started a conga line that wrapped around the bar to Lionel Richies, "All Night Long."
Awesome place to karaoke. I've been to the Mint twice now. Both times have been great--the crowd is always really supportive of the singers. I only have 2 criticisms though. 1) There are a couple of hardcore singers that repeatedly sing. It's not that much of a big deal, but it gets a little annoying when it's crowded and you know there are others who haven't had the chance yet. Also, the last time I got in about an hour before closing. The bartender was kind of being aggressive with me about the 2 drink minimum, even though the place was closing soon. Otherwise, great place to have fun with friends.
AVOID if you're NOT a regular.
This place came highly recommended for karaoke, but if you are NOT a regular, YOU WILL NOT SING. Even if you tip well (which I did), you will wait for hours before you sing as you watch new comers get on the mike before you.
The drinks are OK and the waitstaff is very friendly. But if you come here for karaoke, you willl not sing.
And in my book, UNFRIENDLY karaoke is an evil that should be punished by banishment to the lower circles of hell.
The GREATEST karaoke bar of all!.
I'm a regular at this place, and it's my favorite place to hang out EVER. The staff here are SO nice, friendly, fun, and WONDERFUL! The place DOES get packed on weekends, so be prepared to wait a while (it's true that tipping DOES get you moved up in the rotation, but hey, that's the way it works...). They also have a MASSIVE song selection... thousands and thousands of songs, and they get new ones all the time.
As for the crowd, everyone is really supportive and nice... I never hear people booing anyone. I love this place because the people who come here are SO diverse... from college kids to the retired, gay, straight, transgender, whatever! Everyone comes here and you can meet just about any kind of person.
If you're looking for a fun, upbeat, friendly place with awesome karaoke and quality service, this is it!
felt like a princess on my bday!!!. Ben went OUT of his way to meet ALL my needs for my birthday party--from parking to storing my cake to reserving tables . Chris was super friendly when I called to make the reservations. Frank even called back to ask me how I spell my name for the reservation cards for the tables! he even recorded one of my songs as my bday gift!! the staff is so accomodating and nice!!!! why spend your money at a snootie place? they appreciate your business at this venue!
Great Song List But..... ...I have a serious problem with the KJs at that place. They tend to only let you sing only if you are part of a large party or you are a regular. I know this because of the staff that was around 5 years ago when I went more often, only one of those guys is left and he doesn't make me wait hours to sing one damn song. The KJ on Monday nights seriously made me and my friend I was with wait 2 hours to sing our respective songs when we saw others get to go three times within that timespan. She also sang about 4 times herself, despite there being a large turnout. I know I will avoid going to the Mint for awhile now.
anonymous. this place is hilarious! the dj frank makes the place so funny! the singing is great and the atmosphere is a blast! bartenders are a bit slow and drinks are watered down and often wrong, but overall, the place is worth going to. it's basically a hit & miss with the attitude of the entire staff there, though.
Gay or straight; it's cool!. The Mint is a great mixture of SF eccentricities. Gay, straight, trannies, you name it, it's there! The karaoke generally starts at 4pm, seven nights a week. If you snooze, you lose, since most Fridays and weekends the place is packed after 9pm. The bartenders are great and the KJ's infinitely fair. It is the best sound system in the City for karaoke, too!
stayed, sang, drank, had a blast!. i was there with quite a few people for a b-day after dinner party. it was quite crowded. we didnt get to sit all together but we had a real great time. get there early or else you might barely get to sing one song! it was a great gay/straight crowd.
