In Short – Hastings students and hungry locals enjoy East Coast-style chicken Parmesan, meatball and Reuben sandwiches, or a range of cold offerings at this large Tenderloin deli, where owners Doug Sonn and Tim Brown cull only fresh, top-tier meats and ingredients like Niman corned beef and Farmer's Market veggies. Rich soups and side salads are all house-made and seasonal; specialties include the 174, named after Brown's NYC address, which features beef, cheddar cheese, roasted peppers, caramelized onions and chipotle aioli.

Not Bad Joint For Such A Bad Neighborhood...Worth The Hike!

by cellerdweller at Citysearch

Stumbling upon the gastronomic gems to be had from behind the counter at Morty's Deli is a lot easier now that they deliver most weeknights til 9pm. Those curious to try this Civic Center/Tenderloin hangout's fare can now even do so from the comfort of their own homes! Look 'em up on Eat24. com for the delivery menu.

Aside from the somewhat sketchy location at Hyde and Golden Gate, the place offers an always appetizing array of specials & regular menu items available to order for both lunch & dinner.

The sandwiches are raved about by the regulars and everyone has a fave: the spicy 174, the Catfish Po Boys on Fridays, Eggplant or Chicken Parmesans, or the deliciously decadent Reubens (that even come in a marinated tofu veggie version!).

Appetizers are a lesser known side to their night time biz and include Buffalo Wings with a Cambozola Blu Cheese sauce, or even these amazing breaded and Fried Mac n Cheese Nuggets with a Marinara Dipping Sauce made from San Marzano Tomatoes that really is quite good for such a junk food

Lately they've kept at least 3 soups on tap, and one or two are always vegetarian. Dine In and they usually have 3 or 4 beers on tap ( a couple low budget staples like PBR or Miller and the occasional imports, craft & microbrews like Fat Tire or Duvel for beer & a sandwich snobs.)

The place gets a bit busy at lunch, but you can usually find an early evening table if you happen to be in the neighborhood and want some real East Coast style chow in your hungry belly. It generally ain't fancy fare but it fills ya up, and tickles the tastebuds at the same time.

Great deli In the rough....

by rockngal at Citysearch

To start, the sandwiches there are all pretty good, as I've tried almost all of them. Unique combinations litter the menu, but while you're there you might as well try the LOIN'. If I remember correctly, this has roasted pork loin&pepperoni, smoked gouda, LTO(usual sandwich toppings) and a chipotle aioli... i know this sandwich well as its my fav. The various sides are really good; don't believe me? Ask them for a sample cup. You must attest to the deliciousness of the salads.. also really good.

The food is VERY high quality.

  • Pros: staff, food, prices are good
