Editorial Review for CIRCA – by Marcia Gagliardi
The Scene
This space's makeover into a swanky yet casual destination is notable: Light fixtures with long strings of crystal beads cascade from the ceiling, backlit photos of flowers add artsy flair and plush booths and curving banquettes abound in the restaurant and lounge area. The buzzing bar swarms with well-coiffed and frisky lads and lasses representing a range of ages. Live DJs spinning upbeat tracks fuel the well-lubricated crowd.
The Food
The affordable, mostly small-plate menu offers flavorful and upscale twists on American classics with a nod to local and organic producers. Tater tots come with Dungeness crab and a smoky aioli, while sliders are swathed in Brie and promise (somewhat absent) black truffle. The lightly creamy mac and cheese of shell pasta with lobster and subtle white truffle is a crowd-pleaser, while savory lamb "lollichops" are, unfortunately, more fatty than meaty. Sweets lovers can sink their spoons into the s'mores sundae or quince ginger cake.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe entrance operates more like a club Thu-Sat, with doormen doing crowd control while a line of people waits to get in.
When to GoFootball fans (or other big game watchers) can catch the action on the three big TV screens in the bar area.
The ExtrasAn upstairs mezzanine with its own bar area is rentable for private parties.

I went here recently for an event that I paid for and my jacket was stolen from the bathroom. Granted, I left it in there for merely 10 minutes, but the lack of regard from the hostess and manager makes me never want to return to this "Marina" joint. I even had a sentimental bracelet in the pocket. When the manager finally offered me his card to follow up with him the next day, I emailed him and heard nothing back from him. Not even a polite "sorry, we didn't find your jacket". I will never go here again and will not recommend to anyone I know. Recently I left my phone in a dive bar in Hayes Valley and 2 days later it was still there, turned in by a decent customer or staff member. Interesting difference between a Marina bar and a dive bar. I think I'll stay away from the Marina bars.
