Editorial Review for Straits – by Joanna Currier
The Scene
Shoppers step out from under the glow of the Westfield dome and into this sexy, chocolate-hued haven for top-notch cocktails and exotic cuisine. A plush, full bar and lounge is watched over by an array of giant Buddha heads. Glass room dividers sport an Asian-inspired design motif that is repeated on the elegant menus. Orange lanterns light a large dining area with an exhibition kitchen, while closer to the entrance a date-friendly area is comprised of tiny tables for two.
Food
Chef Chris Yeo brings his popular Singaporean fare from his original (now closed) Geary Street restaurant and second, much-hailed cafe in San Jose to this ramped-up venue, and the flavors remain subtle and satisfying. The large, impressive menu melds the flavors of India, China, Indonesia and Malaysia, with tangy salads, generous curries and lots of ginger and coconut throughout. Crisped, flaky roti with curry sauce is a tasty beginning, as are the curried vegetarian samosas; for a rich dish, try the kicky, tender rendang beef.

I've been here a few times with people from work. On every occasion I have been, the service has been relatively sub-par. I would normally put up with this if the food was great, but, unfortunately, the food was just average. They do have some fun drinks and the atmosphere is pretty cool. Also, very pricey.
Pros: drinks
Cons: everything else

I have eaten here a few times, and if possible, it gets better each time I go! The service was great, and so were the meals! It's so nice to be able to enjoy a nice meal after a day of shopping in downtown; it can be absolutely exhausting trying to hit-up all of those sales! I would highly recommend the "Tuna Tower" (beautiful presentation and excellent seasoning) and the "Prawn and fuji apple salad" which by the way has no lettuce, but is combination of julienned apple and carrots with a mint vinaigrette. Its a wonderful way to cleanse your pallet in between courses. The portions are big as they are serves family style, so order accordingly. I hope that you enjoy the food there as much as I did!
