Neighbor sushi restaurant with good atmosphere, rarely had to wait & opens til Midnite – Mama-san (owner) and her hubby is friendly and we've had only one bad experience but I think that waitress is gone now. The food and ambiance is great for date night or just to hang with the old, old lady : ). If you drink alot of tea, tell them and they will cruise by more often to do the refills (don't know why they won't leave the teapot on the table (which are nice sized) - figure its service). As for the food, fresh - I usually order the ikura with quail egg and the salmon roe "pops" - not chewy which means fresh (old means chewy and taste like fish.. I know, for those that's gonna say, what are you eating at a sushi place if it's NOT fishy... trust me, you don't want your ikura "fishy" - must be fresh, popping and sharp). Presentation is nice - large plates and looks like the food takes most of that (hate the gigantic plate and one small item presentation). Parking is usually good and it you have to, there's always this Toyota Toy Shop auto repair next door where I would park a little into the driveway but put a note where I'm at with cell phone.. so far no calls, haven't been towed or ticketed.. Down a few blocks on Geary there's like three sushi places on one block (22nd/Geary) and the food here at Tani is definitely better and especially the tea (I'm a tea drinker). For those saki lovers - small selection.... but if I wanted saki - go to Hana Zen near Macy's. Only negative is that sometimes the chef gets creative and takes longer than I would like but I guess that's what good company is for (hi, Claire!!). Bathroom is clean and modern. Cost for two is usually around $40.
Great sushi, poor customer service and professionalism – This place is one the worst sushi places I've ever been to !!!
Don't get me wrong. Their sushis are probably one of the best in the city. I ordered the Godzilla which was one of their deep-fried sushis. When it arrived on my table, it was still hot and fresh. Their prices are quite reasonable for the portion during dinner time. They were fresh and tasted really great.
The place itself has a nice ambiance and they have 50% off on beers and sake after 9:30 pm.
However, the service that we received was degrading the nice ambiance and awesome food that we had.
The waitress for our table was rude, she doesn't even know what sushi she's bringing to the table. Our group had 11 people and 2 separate checks. She brought the sushi that was ordered by Group B, but insisted in a rude way that it was ordered by Group A. Both groups ordered a total of 8 sushi rolls, and they came out 1 by 1. what were they thinking? to have 1 person eat one at a time?
I've told the waitress that one more person was coming. When she arrived, they didn't even bother to get the chair for her. We had to get the chair ourselves. After our friend sat down for a good 20 minutes, they still didn't give her any napkins and utensils to eat with. Even after her order arrived!! Can't they see when they brought over her order that she doesn't have any utensils to eat it with?
For a first-timer coming to this place, the waitress really left a bad impression for me and for our group. We are certainly having second thoughts to come to this place again. Even a perfect meal can be horrendous with poor customer service skills.
We might go there again in the future after we get over our bad experience and if the customer service is improved, I will definitely give them higher ratings.
(Note: the poor customer service that we received does not pertain to the whole crew since it was our first time and unfortunately, we had a bad one).
The fish is so fresh - it's buttery and melts in your mouth. So good that my eyes start rolling to the back of my head. And then you'll realize that all the other sushi restaurants you've been to and thought were so great were serving you something sub-par. And the specialty rolls (my favorite is the Lion King) are delicious and pretty big. They have a great selection of sake and great service.
I've never had much trouble finding street parking there, which is a HUGE PLUS. Love this place; I think you should definitely try it out.
Baked, fried and layered specialty rolls are the standouts at this Inner Richmond sushi joint. – In Short
Fans of elaborately dressed rolls drizzled with spicy sauces will appreciate this eatery's take on Japanese fare. Full-color photographs on menus demystify creative names like the Lion King, Godzilla, Hot Floshy and Pink Lady. Adventurous patrons opt to dine omakase style, letting the chef choose a selection of the day's best picks for them. Contemporary interiors take on a sultry glow by night, when low-hanging red lights and white-paper lanterns illuminate the dining room.
The absolute BEST Sushi in San Francisco...and I truly mean it! – I eat at Tani at least twice a month. The sushi rolls and sashimi are creative and fresh. Service is excellent! Their green tea ice cream is also the best I've ever had!
Rolls to try, Lion King, Spicy Poki (if you like seaweed salad, it's so yummy), Toyko Tower, Red Train...you get the picture. As for Sashimi, I always get the Salmon...so good and the pieces are big!
Yum, Yum, Yum!!!
Great Rolls, great prices, and great service. – This place is well priced and has fantastic fish. It is clean, parking is easy to find, and service is first class. Their rolls are big, tasty, and cheap.
best in town! – I love this place! I recommend the shrimp tempura and udon noodles..Everybody there is incredibly sweet. It's perfect for a romantic dinner or a little snack!
This place rocks! Great food, great service, generous portions of food too – One of the most important pieces of enjoying a quality meal is the ambiance. The sushi was excellent, but to compliment the great food was the fact that this restaurant is small and the noise level is low. You can sit there for hours enjoying your sushi, have sake, and hear yourself speak! The food was absoluty great! Not to mention how much you get for what you pay for!! This place is great for a low key evening for really great sushi and conversation.
It can be a great date place, bring out the family, or hang out with friends...
Best nigiri sake (salmon) and rolls around. – We just moved to this neighboorhood and man what a find! This place is tucked away in Inner Richmond -
- but is worth searching out! The service is prompt and polite, prices are very reasonable for the quality and variety you get, and atmosphere pleasant and clean. But to me none of those are nearly as important as the quality of the fish. I have always been just a nigiri girl... But Tani has turned me to some very interesting rolls. Also the rolls didn't skimp on the meat and fillings. The tempura, the servings of which are large, is light and tasty.
Bottom line, I'm lucky I found it before it became too poplar :)
Oh and our favorite rolls - Orange Blossom (salmon over salmon with avocado), Giant Roll (tuna, salmon over California Roll very yummy!) and the Crazy Roll, i don't remember exactly, but I think it has Hamachi and Maguro and of course Salmon :) Enjoy!
