What People Are Saying About Sushi Hana

In Short – Red walls and colorful art imbue this laid-back bar and restaurant with instant energy, while a lengthy menu promises ample options for both carnivores and vegetarians. Playfully named creations like Beauty in Bed, Fire in the Hole and Via Mexico will keep jaded sushi-goers guessing. For the purists, plenty of classic offerings and nigiri selections are also available. The bar stocks sakes from the economical Ozeki to the splurge-worthy Kubota Sen-shin Dai Ginjyo.

When a Restaurant is Quiet on a Friday Night....

That's your first clue. I've been passing by this restaurant for 5 months and decided to give it a try since I miss my favorite Sushi Bar when I moved here from Redondo Beach, CA. The Miso Soup was a very good contender and raised my hopes. The service was good, but then the place wasn't busy at all. Everyone was friendly. I got my hot sake right away, that's good as it was real cold outside and I was frozen. I ordered my long standing favorite, the soft shell crab. That's when the party ended. If I didn't know what it was I wouldn't have known what it was. I have always recieved my soft shell crab INTACT. Not cut in battonets. WTF?! My only guess was that some crabs were not edible so the chef wacked it off and cut it up? I have no clue but the taste was not what I like. Big thumbs down here. I love the buttery melt-in-your-mouth that Good Ono (fatty tuna) provides but when I ordered the "special" I had a real hard time separating it between my mouth and chopsticks. It was tough and chewy. I shared this bad news with the management and they proceeded to try to make it up by chopping up more of this semi-leather and served it in a handroll. Points for the effort but that's not what I wanted. The manager agreed with me about the chewyness and I countered that he shouldn't put it up as a "special" since it wasn't. Truth. The Unagi was good, just as I have enjoyed before. Not out of this world, but good. I ended with the appetizer size Tempura shrimp and veggies. Good. I spent well more than I thought I would which left me disappointed. With all the good Sushi places around the area I won't be returning to this one which is 2 blocks from where I live. Good Luck Hana Bar.
- Pros: 2 blocks from home. Large private party area upstairs
- Cons: Tough fatty tuna, lousy soft shell crab, not enough creativity, very static offerings
Best Sushi !!

I would have to say that sushi hana is my favorite place for sushi in san francisco.. I have been eating sushi for over 20 years, and this is the freshest sushi at the price I have found around town. The staff and owners are very friendly and courteous. And the all you can eat is just as fresh and well made, on sats, and suns.. I really recommend this establishment. I live in the neighborhood and the first two owners, sushi pop, and sushi king, lost out, so I'd like to see these owners make it..nice korean people!!
MY FAVORITE ROLL I S THE VIA MEXICO ROLL! DAMN IT IS GOOD BUT YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE HEAT FROM THE JALAPENOS

THIS PLACE IS A 2 1/2 BLOCKS FROM MY JOB. i NEVER WENT IN UNTIL I HAPPENED TO BE IN THE CITY ON A SUNDAY NIGHT WITH A COMPANION AND I HAD A SUSHI CRAVING. MY COMPANION ORDERED THE PRAWN TEMPURA AND WAS VERY HAPPY BECAUSE THE PRAWNS WERE BIG AND JUICY AND DELICIOUS AND TOOK CARE OF HIS MAN SIZE APPETITE. I ORDERED THE SPIDER ROLL (DEEP FRIED SOFT SHELL CRAB WITH VEGETABLES)AND EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT A SAKE DRINKER WE ORDERED SOME SPECIAL SAKE THAT WAS VERY GOOD.THE SPIDER ROLL WAS DELICIOUS . WE LEFT THE PLACE FEELING SATISFIED AND SINCE THAT NIGHT I HAVE WENT IN FOR SUSHI AT LUNCH TIME 3 OR 4 TIMES A WEEK.
- Pros: THEY MAKE TSOME OF THE TASTIEST ROLLS
- Cons: I ALWAYS HAVE TO ASK FOR EXTRA WASABI. I LIKE TO FROST MY ROLLS LIKE CUPCAKES WITH THE WASABI
Unacceptable service
by frankgrimes at Citysearch
Unacceptable service ruined the whole sushi experience. Plain and simple, the staff could not handle the dinner rush. Preferential treatment was given to a large table of people (of about 8-10). Every other table was flat out ignored. It took about 30 minutes for me to get the roll I ordered and then about another 45 minutes for my girlfriend to get her salmon teriyaki. The waitress never checked to see if we needed things like water or napkins. I practically had to stand up and physically approach the waitress to get noticed. The worst part was that the waitress did not even care. It took probably a good half hour to get the check. I have never felt so angry from a restaurant experience before. I almost just walked out in the middle. This had to be the worst service I've had in San Francisco. The food was average and parking was a nightmare. I felt that my car was unsafe in the neighborhood.
- Pros: Nothing special
- Cons: Service, Service, Service, Service, Service, Parking
Great Sushi for the lay back evening (and a movie)
by jbizzy at Citysearch
I LOVE THIS PLACE... great place to have a lay back evening and a person who just wants good sushi!!! The owner "Scott" is a super nice guy and truly appreciates his patrons. Like the other reviewer my fiance and I frequent this place everyother week if not weekly!!! This location has had about 3 different sushi spots now... I hope SUSHI HANA IS HERE TO STAY!!!
Also this place is right down the street from the movie theatre (AMC Van Ness)... very easy to stop in for dinner before you catch your flick!!! Let's support this place all!
- Pros: Great food for a great price
- Cons: parking
