Tips for Shima Sushi

Three times were a charm, going back tonight because I love that Shiro Maguro!. Richard (owner & sushi chef) is someone I met in Oakland at Mijori on Grand Avenue. This is where he learned (and perfected) his craft behind the sushi bar, and combined it with his friendly disposition, and great sense of humor. I heard from him a year ago that he opened his own place, and finally got into Shima in January. The first time was at lunch, and the restaurant was filled with natural light, and a crowd of people probably from offices based around Opera Plaza (including City Hall staffers and officials.) This I know because on my 2nd & 3rd visits (during dinner,) I witnessed Mayor Newsom and his staff leave a private dining room where they had been meeting over sushi and city business. (He's a regular.) Starting with fish that is VERY FRESH, the Nigiri cuts are big and buttery, the Specialty rolls are eclectic and have that California cuisine influence laced throughout. The servers our quick with refills of hot tea and water (and cute.) The restaurant is very large with private dining rooms for 8 - 50 people, and did I say that the servers are cute?! If you are hitting an event at Herbst Theatre, SF Ballet, SF Symphony or just a movie, Shima Sushi is right there for you to try! Check it out, and ask for Richard!

UNSANITARY, HORRIBLE SERVICE, BAD FOOD. Upon arriving at the restaurant, everything looked nice. We were seated in a booth and placed our drink order. My sprite tasted like soap, and when I asked the waitress to replace it, she seemed inconvenienced. The replacement Sprite tasted just as bad. (Obviously the dishwasher needs to be serviced.)

Our House Salads arrived in a small bowl. Ice Burg lettuce was sitting in the water it was probably washed in, with a small amount of dressing poured over it. By the time our entrees arrived, I noticed that the table cloth on our table was filthy, with spills of soy sauce and other unidentifiable sauces scattered about. The sushi was the worst prepared I have seen to date. It was mostly rice, and fell apart when I tried to grab it with my chopsticks. The Waitress promised real crab, but we received imitation. Luckily I had already lost my appetite. Our tea was cold, and never refilled, in addition to the waitess never checking on us to see how everything was.

I asked to speak to the manager on duty, and was very disappointed with the way he handled the situation. When we received the check nothing was adjusted despite sharing all of these points with him. These were all issues that could be easily resloved, but no one seemed interested in improving the service, or the experience of the diners. I would have done better to eat at Max's.

LOVE IT!!!. My boyfriend and I love this restaurant! Superb food, excellent service and great atmosphere. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Japanese restaurants and I can definitely say that this place is one of my favorites!

freshest fish and the best rolls. this place i found by suprise. it is located in the opera plaza in san francisco its tucked way in the plaza near the theatre. it was suprisingly busy for a restaurant that is not on a visible street. we sat at the sushi bar and ordered some of the freshest sashimi and flavorful rolls. the uni was great, it tasted like the ocean and it melted in my mouth. i knew i would be back again. they carry some obscure and yummy sakes, which i have never seen at other sushi places, the sushi chef knew exactly what to reccommend. they have the best specialty rolls any skii inspired rolls, like the north star, sierra roll etc.. are good and amazing, generous cuts of fish. whatever you do try the specialty rolls they are worth it. i have been searching a long time for a great sushi place and their price is good i have been to all the trendy glitzy sushi places like blowfish, ozumi, etc and enjoyed those places, but was always left hungry and with sticker shock when the bill came. i did not feel that way about this place. i have since gone there 7 times and have brought different friends and they have all claimed it to be their favorite sushi place. you have to try it. sit at the sushi bar.

Editorial Review. Casual sushi joint serves all the standards plus a handful of specialty rolls; bento box and sashimi specials available for lunch.
