Something strange you can't quite put your finger on here. A sort of stifling desperation to be cool. Try criticizing some of the more desperate attempts at style and see if they throw you out. David Becker seems to be trying very hard to hold onto something of his past successes and perhaps he's a bit frustrated at the results because he sure has a hot temper - not something you usually see in successful professional.
