What Our Expert Scouts Say

Hilton San Francisco Financial District
February 27, 2013

Vaguely resembling a giant concrete Foursquare game, this Hilton is an excellent home base for city explorations--it's just a short walk from Chinatown, North Beach, downtown & the Embarcadero. Rooms are good-sized and have big windows with exceptional views (request a high floor and you'll feel like you're in the clouds). There's also a snazzy on-site spa, Tru.

Birthday Stay. I splurged for a one night stay here for my wife's birthday. When we arrived they didn't have the room I had reserved. I wanted a suite with a balcony and COit Tower view. They "upgraded" me to a Presidential Suite which was nice but the TV did not work. Also there was no balcony. I was pretty perturbed but I got over it. The room was nice and the views were great. Everything was within walking distance. Experimenting for lunch in Chinatown was a blast. I still don't know what it was that we ate!!!!!

We are headed here again next weekend for another birthday stay.

Better than Expected!. I must admit, when we saw the exterior of the Hilton, we were a little put off by its drab concrete facade, but it's beautiful on the inside! They remodeled the building a few years ago and did a fantastic job! It feels like a brand new hotel. We were in San Francisco for the San Francisco Marathon. The Hilton is only 3/4 a mile away from the Marathon Start line. My husband also used the Hilton's fitness center on the days leading up to the Marathon and said it was really nice. We booked really far in advance and got a room under $100, which was perfect! We couldn't believe we found such a great deal! They did give us a room on the corner with a smaller window, but we didn't care because we got such a great deal. We had a great view of Telegraph Hill and Alcatraz. We could hear street noise, but that's expected for a hotel in the heart of downtown San Francisco. If you want to mask the street noise, just turn on the fan on the thermostat. It works like a charm! We had breakfast at the hotel one morning when we were in a hurry and it's extremely over priced! Venture out into the city for breakfast... Mama's, Cafe Divine, or Sears are a couple recommendations and within walking distance of the hotel. The Hilton is in a prime location, within walking distance of almost everything... China Town, Cable Cars, Embarcadero, restaurants, etc. The room was nicely appointed, the hotel was really clean, the staff was personable. All in all, it's a great hotel !!! We would stay again.

Great Place for out of town family or friends to stay.. I was happy with the service my parents got from the HIlton on Kearney St. San Francisco, they said thats where they want to stay from now on when they visit SF.The front desk staff are friendly, hospitable, and rooms were extremely clean. The concierge and the food at the restaurant was great, conveniently located downtown, and had great night life. A new wine bar inside the lobby, next to one of my favorite spa's Tru.

Dirty room. Overall I wanted to like this hotel, because I loved the location in the heart of Chinatown, but we weren't treated well from the start: we were checked into a dirty room, and then we had to wait over an hour to get another room. The manager promised to get us an upgraded room, and then failed to do so - our second room was the same as the first. To the manager's credit, he did treat us to drinks at the hotel bar while we were waiting.

Also, on the second day of our stay, we came into the room after housekeeping had been there to find something that looked like dried snot on the comforter of the bed. We had to call for housekeeping to change the sheets.

Worth the Return. I spent a weekend at the Hilton on Kearny and I enjoyed all of it. The hotel was clean and modern and everything functioned well. There was a minor problem with one of my card keys but getting a new one from the front desk was simple enough. I also managed to lock myself out of my room but that was taken care of quickly and without anyone laughing at me. The staff was very polite, courteous and helpful. Room service, valet parking and the cleaning service all earned their tips. I ordered room service breakfast both days and the pancakes were perfect.

It wasn't clear from their website that there would be extra charges for some of the services. I expected to pay extra to use the phone, but I was surprised by the charges for using their on site computers. I spent 11 minutes to check and send e-mail and the charge was $10. There was a bottle of Evian water in the room and it had a tag of $4.50 for the bottle. On Demand movies were between $10 to $15. Those charges can add up quickly. Be aware.

I will stay there again. But I'll drink the tap water and I'll try to bring a laptop with me.

Financial District hotel bistro delivers Mediterranean and California fare in a business-casual setting.. In Short
A long, narrow flame rising from a bed of crystal-like rocks--enclosed in a protective, open-topped case--marks the entrance of the Hilton's all-day bar and restaurant. On one side of the expansive dining room, a lounge area with red leather loungers beckons guests to relax over coffee or cocktails. Steak vesuvio and capellini bianchini, a pasta dish with grilled chicken, roasted red peppers and Asiago cheese, are characteristic of the menu's Cal-Med offerings.

very nice change. This place used to be a holiday inn and i wasn't too excited about staying here, but i was pleasantly surprised with how nice it was! The rooms were pretty and the beds were super comfy. Staff was very accomodating and my favorite spa is in their lobby, the stay couldn't have been better!

Restaurant has no view, lousy service. Beware.. My husband chose this place thinking they have a good view. He called and make reservations for a party of 12 and was assured that they had reserved a private room for us with a view. When we walked in, we saw that the restaurant was on the lobby level, not high up. When we asked about the view, the hostess said that the window looks out to the neighboring building which classifies as a view. The service was horrible, with us being pressurized to order immediately. Inspite of the hours claim that it is open until midnight, apparantly you have to order by 9:45?!?!?!?

Car theft in Valet looked like inside job. Long story short. Valet unloaded everything from the car with the exception of a Black camera bag that was sitting in the back of the car along with the rest of my stuff. I said "everything goes up to the room". I'm a photographer and had a lot of gear. The next morning at 6am i get a call stating that i'm needed in the garage as there had "been an incident". My window was smashed and all the contents of the car were gone. The CD's i can llive without but the Leica M6 that I later realize was stolen (and then confirmed by security via video tape of the whole thing) is not so easy to handle. At the time of the break in the hotel had notified us that they contract out the valet parking to ACE parking and that any claim would need to be taken up with them. Well, Ace have a caviot on the valet ticket stating that they are not responsible for any loss or damages to the car while it is their possesion even though the day of the break in the manager for Ace at that location assured me that the contents of the car would be replaced. Now, this garage has video and psyical security but no one was around when the theft took place. Left a bad taste in my mouth. SF police wouldn't even respond.
