What a hidden jewel!. I have lived in NYC, Honolulu and SF. I know one of the world's greatest experts on scotch whiskey--he helped create the bar. WOW. The ambiance is total Mission "now," the whiskey selection is incredible, the food is some of the best Japanese I've ever had. This place rocks and will not stay hidden long. A little out of the way, but I think it adds to the allure. I live in the Mission. Young crowd, too!
Such A Great Place.
We simply had a great time. Our waitress was very informative about both the food and surprisingly their whiskey selection. Even though I dont drink whiskey she sugested for me the apple mack and now I'm hooked ..excellent whiskey cocktail
The food was amazing. We tried the toro sashimi as well as the hamachi and both were extremly fresh. The black ahi was a great dish as well as the so unusaual nihon burger even though it did not look like a burger.. we loved it. nihon even though it seems for the first while when you enter as a sophisticated bar but it is an excellent restuarant
Soon to be a hit. I absolutely loved this place. The first thing that struck me about this resturant was how diffrent its atmosphere is from outside, very unexpected. The restaurant downstaires area is lit in an orange yellow glow from the bar. The floor is white and unusual, yet a bit cold I would think in comparison to the upstaires dining area that I fell in love with. I walked in and was politely greeted by the hostess, who promptly asked to assist me with a table and upon sitting down asked if she should hang my coat for me. Things like this always win points with me! Then there's the food. Combination of sushi & cooked items. The sushi tasted very fresh and good and the lamb robata was excellent, chicken wings were very juicy but oily. Ahhh they had a nice bar that seemed to carry lots of whiskies ... great place
Fabulous Lounge in SF. I just hosted my husband's birthday party in the private room upstairs and it was FABULOUS! THe service was excellent, food was great, drinks were strong and good!

I was here last Thursday with few friends. Excellent service and excellent rolls and seriously fresh sushi. The "Yamato" and "Samuri" rolls are just amazing. You must get them.
I had no idea that so many people buy bottles there. While there I saw the staff take about four new bottles to the people in the bottle room. This place seems to sell nothing but whisky, check their bottle room and locker and see how many bottles stored there.
The place is not cheap but you actually pay for what you get & I think this place is one of those places that caters to the more affluent customers ! I like it though
What a disappointment....
After hearing the buzz I was very excited to eat at Nihon. Unfortunately the food was not good at all...too much sauce on everything: sushi coated in mayonaise and sweet and sour sauce...yuck. The only things that were palatable were the rolls and those were so expensive it was ridiculous. Service was marginal too.
All in all a great place to go and have a drink, the lounge is very cool, but DO NOT waste your money on the food!
Surprsied.
I went there after hearing a lot about it and thought it would not meet my expextations... How wrong I was.
I should say I did not eat upstaires as we did not have a `resrevation so we settled at three bar stools at the bar. Both the service we got and the food served to us were excellent. The bar keeper kept recommendations coming and we must have tried three or four diffrent whiskies each ' what a selection they have' the music was mellow jaz and felt perfect for the atmosphere. that white floor !! intresting. i recommend nihon for both food & drink.
Dissapointed. As a foodie who grew up in Japan, I was excited to read the words "izakaya-style cusine with a twist". In my mind, I thought wow, someone is finally putting together a true-modern, tokyo-style, izakaya style bar/ resturant. But man was I dissapointed. Their menu is the same old modern Japanese stuff that you could find anywhere, and what they mean by izakaya-style is that the portions are small. Their menu is so uninventive that I'm a little offended that they would use the name "nihon". I know this is not japan but I'm getting tired of Japanese food=sushi/sahimi equation here. Their warm plates were not memorable either. But, on the bright side, the ambience rocks, as does their whisky selection. Suntory whiskey! I would go for drinks, but don't try to eat there if you are really hungry. It would take many plates to get any satisfaction.
BEWARE: HORRIBLE, FOUL SUSHI. This place is to be avoided. We sent back 3 dishes-- the tuna poke tasted putrid and fishy, the rolls were sub-par, the lamb skewers were fatty and sinewy. And to top it off it was waaaay overpriced. The edamame was ok, but come on, steamed beans can't be too difficult... Avoid this establishment.
Superb Bar.
What a place. the whisky list is like no other I have ever seen. you walk in the door and all you see is whisky. Although they have everything else I would not recommend drinking anything but the brown stuff.
Service is excellent, very friendly, informative and sincere. We ordered few apetizers at the bar and my god, their hamachi stuffed shitake' is to die for. this place rocks.. we stayed there no less than three hours and it was a party...
On my first visit, they manged to make a regular out of me. I simply hope it does not get overly exposed..
