Though portions are small, the food is close to perfect. Stay well-stocked with bread, as the broths and sauces tend to steal the show!
Great place. One of the best places ever been in, go check yourself and you know what I mean.
Great California Cuisine. The food is really great and the cocktail menu is unique. My only complaint is that I was cold so I had to order the tomato soup to warm up which isn't so bad.
Overpriced, dull atmosphere, boring decor, food only looks good.
Well, I'm not a negative person and I love to eat out.
Yet, I wish some restaurants simply didn't exist. Like this one.
Its expensive. The atmosphere is boring. It looks like a bunker (have you seen a movie "The Fall" about last days of Hitler in his underground hideout? Same theme)
The service is friendly and waiters are easy going. Service was actually the only good impression.
Vegetables were overcooked and food was too salty (which is very rare for a high end restaurant). Portions are "European" i.e. very small. Get ready to leave hungry.
It was also greasy, you could tell they used a lot of butter when cooking.
They served cold bread. Only two tap beers on the menu.
The place was quite full though, surprisingly.
Anyhow, if you like vibrant, interesting dining, groovy decor, delicious food and exciting crowd - this place is not for you.
If you are kind of an office cubicle character, who is afraid of the world and lives in the shoe box - you'll feel protected from the world and its beauty. And your ego will be satisfied by a pricy check for nothing.
Triple Crown Winner in my book. I am pathetically jaded on restaurants, and Range blew me away. I ate there two weeks ago and can't stop talking about it. Every element of the place is professional and welcoming. The wait staff are skilled and unobtrusive. It reminds you that a good waitperson is a very good thing. They allowed us (a table of 4) to linger at our table, and we never felt rushed. The food was absolutely fabulous, even though I ordered 3 courses that typically aren't my favorites. The fish and beef served to our table were both done perfectly. The desserts were equally as good. They even gave us a free desert because the fourth person in our party did not order one. It was incredibly courteous. If you peek in the kitchen here, it looks like a choreographed dance of chefs who know what they are doing. It's a real kitchen. We moved to the bar after our meal and talked to other patrons - some where off-duty staff that had come in for a meal - and indulged in the most exciting cocktails I know of in SF right now. As my friend said, the "Envy" is like a spa vacation in a glass. This even holds up after you have 3. Maybe we had such a pleasant un-rushed evening because we had an early reservation (at 6 pm), if so, I would recommend getting an early reservation. They do keep tables by the door open specifically for walk-ins, however, and I noticed that one of them was pretty much always open during the evening.
Not as good as it used to be.. I used to really enjoy Range, but it's not as good as it used to be. Even with early (6:15pm) dinner, the wait for the food reaches 45 minutes. The portions are much smaller (Thai Snapper) and the menu is nothing outstanding. Too bad because it used to be so much better.
Seems to have it all together. On entry, it might be just a neighborhood hangout, but once the food is on the table, it's city-class. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I can report on only one dinner, but it was sterling. If there is one dish that is a touchstone as to how a kitchen is doing, it might be scallops. These were ideally springy (it's a catch muscle that flaps the bivalves shells as it goes scooting over the bottom), not too soft, in a brown savory shellfish bisque that played off nicely against the grilled edges of the scallops; and cute, crisp radish sprouts on top. Cross-rib roast: not fork-cuttable (I tried) but very tender and mellow, on a great base (was that fennel with the little potatoes?) And a nice dessert choice. Good wine list, although I found mine in the by-the-glass section. This young place seems to have it all together; all the best to them!
Terrific, refined comfort food. Portions are nice and not over-the-top, choices are relatively few but everything we had was really great. Ravioli, fish, tartar, and more were all great. Wines by the glass were also skimpy in overall choice, but well picked out and thought out. Overall service was friendly and efficient, though our waiter didn't have a lot going on "upstairs." We asked for his you-can't-miss-these-dishes recommendations and he (sweetly) looked at us, and said "uh, I don't know, it's all good." The hostess & bartender were great and the crowd was buzzing. I can't wait to go back.
Good, Tasty Food. Your tummy feels good after you leave.. I went to Range twice in two weeks. It's a great restaurant for reasonably priced and portioned, tasty, original food. Not fancy, but really good. The desserts are great right now, during summer fruit season. Loved the tartes, crisps, very refreshing and great combinations of sour and sweet. Dinner for six, including appetizer, entree and dessert was only $350, including tax and tip. Awesome deal for the food you get. Easy to become a regular.
Food Holds Up Next to the Big Boys--Mina, Danko, Fleur de Lys. I love this place! The food is creative, fresh and memorable. It could possibly be my favorite restaurant in San Francisco.
