The Scene – Sunlight pours through windows while well-dressed groups sip white sangria at the front bar. Polished wood floors extend to a narrow center room bordered by pastel yellow walls that are spruced up with fuzzily focused photos of beach life. A bunch of booths hug a back dining room accented with fresh flowers and mirrors. Waitstaff move to jazzy sounds and offer in-depth accounts of the cuisine, just short of suggestions. – – The Food – A petite menu features regularly refreshed items. The cured salmon salad is a delicious yogurt-dressed starter spiked with…

Great California Cuisine

by jean111111 at Citysearch

The food is really great and the cocktail menu is unique. My only complaint is that I was cold so I had to order the tomato soup to warm up which isn't so bad.

  • Pros: Great menu
  • Cons: The restaurant is over air-conditioned.

Overpriced, dull atmosphere, boring decor, food only looks good

by Danesh at Citysearch

Well, I'm not a negative person and I love to eat out.

Yet, I wish some restaurants simply didn't exist. Like this one.

Its expensive. The atmosphere is boring. It looks like a bunker (have you seen a movie "The Fall" about last days of Hitler in his underground hideout? Same theme)

The service is friendly and waiters are easy going. Service was actually the only good impression.

Vegetables were overcooked and food was too salty (which is very rare for a high end restaurant). Portions are "European" i.e. very small. Get ready to leave hungry.

It was also greasy, you could tell they used a lot of butter when cooking.

They served cold bread. Only two tap beers on the menu.

The place was quite full though, surprisingly.

Anyhow, if you like vibrant, interesting dining, groovy decor, delicious food and exciting crowd - this place is not for you.

If you are kind of an office cubicle character, who is afraid of the world and lives in the shoe box - you'll feel protected from the world and its beauty. And your ego will be satisfied by a pricy check for nothing.

  • Pros: good service
  • Cons: Boring place which feels like a bunker, dull atmosphere and food which only looks good

Triple Crown Winner in my book

by MrPeepers at Citysearch

I am pathetically jaded on restaurants, and Range blew me away. I ate there two weeks ago and can't stop talking about it. Every element of the place is professional and welcoming. The wait staff are skilled and unobtrusive. It reminds you that a good waitperson is a very good thing. They allowed us (a table of 4) to linger at our table, and we never felt rushed. The food was absolutely fabulous, even though I ordered 3 courses that typically aren't my favorites. The fish and beef served to our table were both done perfectly. The desserts were equally as good. They even gave us a free desert because the fourth person in our party did not order one. It was incredibly courteous. If you peek in the kitchen here, it looks like a choreographed dance of chefs who know what they are doing. It's a real kitchen. We moved to the bar after our meal and talked to other patrons - some where off-duty staff that had come in for a meal - and indulged in the most exciting cocktails I know of in SF right now. As my friend said, the "Envy" is like a spa vacation in a glass. This even holds up after you have 3. Maybe we had such a pleasant un-rushed evening because we had an early reservation (at 6 pm), if so, I would recommend getting an early reservation. They do keep tables by the door open specifically for walk-ins, however, and I noticed that one of them was pretty much always open during the evening.

  • Pros: Professional and friendly service, fabluous space, food puts it in the top 10 restaurants of SF and its in the Mission
  • Cons: Not particularly inexpensive, but well worth it
