Editorial Review for Big Lantern Dim Sum – by Jen Robbins
The Scene
A beautifully carved wooden screen and goldfish-filled fountain inject a dash of elegance into the otherwise casual dining room. A screened-in porch and a few sidewalk tables provide additional seating for neighborhood locals and small groups. Servers are quick with recommendations and on top of their game, whisking away empty plates and briskly refilling empty water glasses.
The Food
Accessible Chinese standards prove consistent but make for few surprises. Dim sum standouts include a baked barbecue pork bun that strikes a balance between sweet and savory and a tasty turnip cake. The menu is stocked with plenty of the usual suspects--including kung pao chicken and Peking duck--but mains like beef with winter melon and the Half Moon Bay Harvest, a heaping serving of prawns, scallops, fish and calamari, liven up the offerings. Sweet endings include sugary sesame puffs filled with red bean paste and fresh mango pudding.

My boyfriend and I are so happy we chanced upon this restaurant. Every time we visit SF, we make it a point to stop in for their Sweet/Sour Veggie Chicken, Black Bean Asparagus...Potstickers. One of the servers is unfriendly, but the rest of the crew is very sweet and welcoming. Everything we've had is served hot and excellent, along with the service. We haven't tried much of their Dimsum, so I can't speak to that. It's a pretty nice atmosphere/decor, compared to a lot of Chinese restaurants we've been to. This is definitely our favorite Chinese restaurant anywhere.
Pros: food
Cons: parking

The food is better than average dimsum at Los Angeles but nothing specatcular. The service is good as we were the first customers at 10:30am. :-p If you want better food and service, try Yank Sing.
Pros: service, better than average dimsum
Cons: parking
