Editorial Review for Zuppa – by Gina Goff
The Scene
The small industrial space is maximized by towering ceilings, dark hardwood floors and small mirrors inset in concrete walls. Long banquettes outline the dining room, which is filled by dark wood tables with low, silver lamps suspended overhead. The main bar along the back wall seats a dozen; a second hutch-like bar is situated along the right wall.
The Food
Amiable, tuxedo-clad servers easily maneuver the crowded space to deliver enormous portions of southern Italian cuisine. Starters include tender cured meats served on a cutting board alongside a never-ending replenishment of warm focaccia, and wood-fired pizzas with thin, chewy crusts. Pastas and hearty mains, like bone-in rib eye garnished with roasted garlic and steeped in a light tomato sauce, are big enough to share. The impressive, all-Italian wine list is comprehensive, but by-the-glass options are limited. Diners who save room for dessert often opt for the fig tart.

Insider Tips
ParkingA lot is conveniently located across the street, but proximity to the ballpark means a significant hike in rates on game nights.
Know Before You GoThe menu is almost entirely in Italian, with only brief English translations. Don't be shy about asking your server for more detail.
Where to SitMake a reservation well in advance to score the balcony booth above the second bar, which gives a bird's-eye view to all the action and a lot more elbow room than you'll get at any other seat in the house.
Save TimeThe address is Fourth Street, but the entrance is actually on Freelon, a side street between Brannan and Bryant.

A friend was visiting from LA and I picked this place to "impress" him with the great SF gourmet dining experience and instead I got embarrased. I made a reservation the night before and we were properly seated. Here is where the problems started - the waitress could not accomodate a simple switching of incredient request in our appetizer, instead she just "forgot" to bring our appetizer or came up with some shallow excuse at which point we asked her to forget we ever ordered an appetizer. The foccacia bread they brought out (only once btw) looked like it was 5 days old and had been sittign in the open for awhile drying. Then came our meals - we had two pasta dishes, both were half-cooked, very small portions and tasteless..and this was for $20-25 we paid per dish. From the reviews I now understand that perhaps their pizza is good but please please go somewhere else for a good pasta dish!!!

Came here on a whim and loved it! No reservations but sat at the bar...cool bar and great drinks. I didn't want to review this so that I could keep it quiet but too many people know about it already. Great value for the money!
