Oakland Red Door Cafe: Assaulted for asking if they were open for dinner. (How that can be construed as an insult is beyond me).
I?ve been living in Dwtn Oakland for 11+ years and keep a watchful/hopeful eye on new eateries to explore & support. Red Door Cafe looks great - nice menu- clean - well decorated. I went in and asked what time they closed. He said "in 5 minutes". Disappointed that this wouldn?t an option for late afternoon /evenings, (I keep self employed hours) I responded to confirm "Oh, so you are not open for dinner." in what I thought was a simple tone. He snapped back- "No one is open in this neighbourhood!" I corrected him in a friendly tone. "Well actually, the Spice Monkey serves dinner."
He then raised his voice, "Well then, go support them. We don't want you here! He then continued.."Go support one of those restaurants on an evening when it is being robbed!! "
Yikes, did he just suggest I be inadvertently / directly robbed too because I asked a touchy question?
I asked why he a being so snippety with me and he said "I am sick of people's judgments!"
? judgments?? I responded "All I did was ask if you were open for dinner." I got another "Get out! I don't want your business"
Yikes, angry man serving food.... I do not want to touch any food that has been near him. I felt verbally assaulted.
I would have liked to try this place for lunch but can't imagine supporting anyone who inadvertently suggests I should be robbed!
(PS I believe they apprehended the Oakland / Piedmont restaurant robbers already)
PPS: If he is the owner, then I feel sad that my once unpretentious Oakland neighbourhood is being infiltrated by an arrogant ill tempered cafe proprietor. And yes- that is an official judgment. I am sorry if he was ever a part of these unfortunate robberies but attacking potential customers is not the answer. I feel disappointed that I will never patronize this business.
rude and disappointing.
I pulled up with my bf, right in front, rock star parking! i looked in and felt really positive, there were so many people inside on a Saturday, in downtown Oakland c'mon that's a big deal!!
i love Oakland, and when i see a positive thing like that, i'm all for it..which is why i wanted to ask this place if they wanted to be involved in my event, O-Trek, Oakland's Own Scavenger Hunt Foot Race where you can win cash (google it)
but if i could give the place NO STARS i would!
i walked in and barely squeezed our way to the counter when i was met with a man of the energy and attitude of a purse-dog. "i'm REALLY busy right now... and i can't take your order for like another 10 minutes" as he tries to put together a wrap of some sort. i'm not in a rush so i say, "oh, it's ok.... we can wait"
then he shoots back with the same chihuahua energy with something about ordering and he can take our order outside for us... we say, "oh no... we weren't going to order, we were going to --" "well, i'm really busy right now..."
ok... so chihuahua man cuts me off... i'm a lil taken aback, but i can tell he IS really busy, so i figure, i can just leave a flyer and he can get back to me when/if he wants to or if he's interested... so i say, "well, can i give --"
chihuahua man cuts me off AGAIN and says to me with a glassy eyed look and a tilt of his head in an attitude and says "wow... you're REALLY persistent... i'm REALLY busy right now" i try to say something more but he just shoots back with "i'm REALLY busy right now"
exasperated, i throw my hands in the air and try to leave as soon as possible as he continues to talk in his chihuahua voice about something, but apparently he was very busy... as i'm leaving... i heard a lady say, "he said he's busy..."
ok, ok! i get it, he's busy - but who treats their potential customers like that? and if you can't talk and wrap at the same time, maybe running a BUSY-ness isn't your forte
my favorite local coffee shop. Red Door is a really cute cafe. The french toast & lattes are amazing. The staff is friendly. It is a great place to hang out...when it is open. I closes at 6 p.m! I would go much more often if I could read w/out having to head home early, and sometimes I get home in the afternoon craving a latte to no avail.
The perfect neighborhood cafe. This is the place - the perfect cafe. You can get a great weekend or lazy weekday late lunch or early dinner out of many of their entrees. My favorite is the Mama Za Za Wrap! The owner is such a great guy, and he has gathered some very good people to help him out. You feel immediately at home, and more so, each time that you visit. Pick a funky, comfy spot and relax! My book club has used the space twice now - and we love it! A great reader and cafe lounger, I've waited for just this kind of cafe in this part of town (the alternative to the usual chains and coffee houses in Polk Gulch that serve as all day hang-outs to leery-eyed gang of customers). Wonderful mochas...mmm...mmm.
Great chill spot. Love Red Door. Super friendly staff, good food, nice ambience, huge coffees. I'll go here again and again...
frenchy toast and capricorn coffee. you walk in to the red door cafe and ahmed, who runs the place (former owner of cafe hurghada) is suddenly your new best friend. unlike your old best friend though, ahmed can cook! everything at red door is delicious and reasonably priced.
Very charming new restaurant on Nob Hill, stumbled across by coincidence. The Ambiance is very unique, good interantional music playing in the background, excellent understated decor, somewhat artsy with the original wall art. The food is no exception, quite unique, apparently the owners own recipes and concoctions, but the outcome is extremely appetizing.
It is kind of a place were you would want to be a regular at, get all comfortable and relax.
Hidden gem! (Great service).
"Great food, great atomosphere, great prices. The food, staff and attention to detail make this cozy neighborhood cafe one of the hidden gems of San Francisco... An absolute must if you are near the area!"
I read a negative review from a previous patron i.e. srbaker! (let's put it this way they actually gave a positive review of Arby's if that says anything). They had commented on the rudeness of the staff (absolutely NOT true). The owner is a wonderful host who knows all regular clentele on a first name basis. The staff are great, fun, caring people who are attentive to their customers and put their heart and soul into the exquisite food!
Wonderful! Hip! Cozy! Loved it!. My girlfriend and I spent five days in San Fran and ended up visiting the Red Door four of those days. We loved it! My girlfriend cherished the asthetic look and feel to it and I loved the food (you have to see how they serve the wraps and DEFINATELY try the Red Door burger). Both of us appreciated the service. While the the staff were extremely pleasant, the owner always took it upon himself to make sure his patrons felt welcomed and comfortable. Though living it a city full of cafes -NYC, the Red Door provided a combination of freshness and warmth as well as great food/friendliness I have yet to see here in NYC. Viva SF!! Keep it up, Red Door!!
Another great jewel of sf. This is a great little place in a great part of the city. The food is great, and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Yesterday was my third time there and it was wonderful. Definitely check this one out.
