The Scene
Exotic stone carvings and dramatic statues greet casually hip diners at this tranquil, two-story Thai outpost. Fragile orchids adorn dark wood tables throughout the chic space, which is subtly split into two restaurants; each one takes up a portion of the first and second floors. Diners on the north half nosh among colossal golden Buddahs at Citizen Thai, while south side Monkey Bar patrons dine under a canopy of colorful silk lanterns or at a bar lined with vivid masks.
The Food
The Monkey Bar serves up street fare such as noodles and stir-fry, while its more sophisticated counterpart offers artful small plates. Most impressive is roasted duck curry served in a hollowed pineapple. Though dessert selection is limited and appetizers, like chicken satay, are somewhat conventional, exotic dishes that combine sweet and savory flavors, such as a soft shell crab and green papaya salad, make for tantalizing choices.

I'll keep that 5-Star, World Class review for truly wold class places, but Citizen Thai and the Monkey is fantastic. Piping hot, flavorful dishes... friendly service... great drinks... chef's tastings... good prices - you can't go wrong.

I recently went there because I heard about their Happy Hour. I had some cocktails, some free food with my Red Curry with chicken dish. It is right of the main drag of North Beach's famous Broadway area. If you are in the mood for a new place for after work or Happy Hour. Try Citizen Thai.

Sometimes this place is great, other times not good at all. The pepper garlic shrimp (served only in the Monkey Bar) two weeks ago was outstanding: flavorful, crispy, perfectly cooked and served with a large portion of broccoli. Last night the same dish has subdued flavors and the breaded topping was falling off the shrimp, as if cooked in oil of the wrong temperature or left sitting too long before serving. It was served on a bed of lettuce with no broccoli. Papaya salad was fresh but bland; this should be a spicy dish. The freshness of seafood can also be a problem, particularly on weekdays. It does have a nice atmosphere, and when the food is good it's worth the visit.
