The Scene – Two big windows flank the curtained vestibule, allowing glimpses of well-heeled foot traffic. Modern artwork lines lime-hued walls and white, amorphous-shaped lamps hang from the high ceiling, giving the room an airy ambience. The all-male waitstaff, many of whom speak Italian, dictate a leisurely paced meal. – – The Food – An extensive menu is split into thirds, with house-made pastas and entrees outshining antipasti offerings. There's nothing wrong with artichoke hearts stuffed with goat cheese, but the baking process dries the dish, while the same…

Editor's Tips

Save Money:
Order the three-course prix-fixe menu for only $24 daily 4:30pm-5:30pm. The meal includes an appetizer, main course and dessert.
Parking:
If you can't find a metered space out front, there's a pay garage on Union and Buchanan Streets.
Where to Sit:
Reserve a window seat for prime people-watching. Romantic couples looking for privacy should request the booth tucked in the far left corner of the dining room.

Capannina an Italian Restaurant that belongs in North Beach

by Edward Voss at Citysearch

The food was mediocre especially for the price. The service rushed and the waiter indicated that he wanted us out of the restaurant so he could get the table. The wine pours were stingy and the bar doesn't even have Grappa. This restaruant is highly overrated. The restaurant reminds of the tourist restaurants in North Beach, San Francisco and Florence, Italy that cater to ignorant toursits. I will not go back.

Very delicious Italian!

by MelSF , Citysearch Contributor at Citysearch

Capannina has delicious Italian food! I went there for dinner on a weekday night and it seemed pretty empty so I was concerned, but was pleasantly surprised. I started out with the Gamberi Piccanti Con Polenta. They were little polenta cakes with spicy prawns over them. It was a really great appetizer. For an entree I ordered the Tonno alla Griglia con Risotto ai Gamberi Piccanti. The Ahi was really fresh and the prawn risotto was perfectly made. The service at the restaurant was excellent. I will definitely come back here.

What a great find!

After reading all the user reviews for Capannina. I decided this would be the rest. to take my Boyfriend for his Bday. Not only was the service and food outstanding. They brought over a couple of candles and dimmed the light for us to create a romantic setting..How cute! They even sang Happy Birthday to my boyfirend in Italian. The chocolate cake is to die for. A must if you want to take family or friends out for a special occasion.

We found everything in this neighborhood gem: great food, service and atmosphere!

by Lecasciana at Citysearch

I usually don't review restaurants unless they are very bad, but in this case, my husband (who is an Italian)and I wanted to share our favorite italian restaurant with everybody. We've been going to Capannina regularly for a while. Althought we try new restaurants all the time, this restaurant is still our find. When we want to make sure we have a perfect dinner experience we go there. We had a large dinner party there once and everybody was so impressed by the service and food. All glasses were always filled, the waiters were friendly and the dishes came in timely fashion, all at the same time. The food was great! We just enjoyed ourselves and they did the rest. The owner and the staff are always so nice and make us feel welcome. The ambiance is refined and cozy. It's never too loud even tough the place is always full. But the best is the food! The dishes are well presented and in decent portions, and everything we ever ordered has always been delicious! We could not forget the tiramisu... soooo good!

I recommend to make reservations before you go on weekends.

Wonderful food and superb service

by marlenejw46 at Citysearch

My sister and I share dinner about twice a month when she visits from Sacramento. Last night was the third time we visited and have yet to be disappointed. The food is always superior and the service is friendly and as it should be. Don't make the mistake of skipping dessert as they are absolutely wonderful. This is truly one of our favorite spots.

  • Pros: Good size portions, pleasant intimate ambience, great flavors
  • Cons: parking can be difficult in this neighborhood
