Editorial Review for Spargo, A Place for Men – by Gina Goff
In Short
From the brown-hued leather sofas to the big-screen televisions blaring the Giants game and movies like "Die Hard," it's clear that this is boys-only territory. While services like manicures, waxing, massages and facials take aim at metrosexuals, the haircuts, ear hair trims and shoe shines at the mahogany platform stand pay homage to neighborhood barbershops of yore. All services include complimentary drinks and hot face towels.

I am a VERY regular client at Spargo and have been happy with their services, until recently. First, Alicia is not there anymore, which immediately made me question if I should return since I only visited Spargo because of her services. I decided to book an appointment for a massage, facial, manicure and pedicure and called to schedule it. When I called, Diane picked up the phone and I informed her what I was looking for. The first thing she did was laugh at me and then told me that she'd have to put me on hold and then stuck me on hold before I could get a word out. After she started laughing at me, I immediately hung up and decided I'm never returning. I easily spent over $200 a month at Spargo every month and to have someone laugh at me is out of line. Now, I'll be laughing all the way over to another spa. In addition, since Alicia left, I've heard it hasn't been the same and I wouldn't return if Alicia isn't there. She seemed to be the most astute at what she did. The girls at the front desk were so brain dead most of the time that I sometimes felt as if I needed a defibrilator to shock them back into existence. Bottom line--DON'T GO. If they treat me that way, I cringe to see what would happen to a new client.
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Dumb staff, terrible etiquette, they don't validate except on Saturdays

I have no choice but to rate Spargo "not recommended". They failed to put my appointment into the system, so when I arrived they were not able to take me. There was an opening when I called, so it must have been filled after I had taken the slot. It was obvious when the owner was shown the name of the person in my slot that it was a known (and valued) customer, as opposed to me...a new customer. Up until that point it had been a positive experience. I found them through City Search. They had good reviews. Their website was clear. They had a phone number for same-day appointments. The owner answered personally and had available slots. I gave my name and number. Easy. It was a 20-minute walk to the salon. Nice. They looked at me blankly as I gave my name. Worrisome. The owner came out and said it was her fault. Nice but worthless. She offered another slot in an hour and fifteen minutes. Nice, but worthless. There was one solution....they could have honored my original appointment and apologized to the person who booked after I did. They made their choice. I have no choice: one star (I wish there were a zero)
Pros: Good website, good location
Cons: Messed up my appointment and failed to honor it
