I love goldberry – Goldberry offers exception quality jewelry and a nice selection to choose from.
Engagement Ring Purchase- A great end... – Engagement Ring Purchase- A great end to an otherwise terrifying process.
As the title hints, this was a fairly scary process for me. I met the love of my life, I had money, now I needed THE perfect ring. My first stop: Tiffany & Co (Union Square, SF). The result: fear, intimidation, disappointment. I studied up on the 4 Cs, I set a budget for myself, and thought it would be as simple as walking in, picking a huge, brilliant stone, and walking out with that little blue box. Wow - was I wrong. I wasn't treated poorly, but it was clear that to them, I was simply just another boy who knew nothing about diamonds, had fallen in love, and was ready to part with a huge chunk of cash - as is the tradition. I couldn't believe how little (literally tiny) my money could buy in that store. That is not even to mention quality (or lack there of).
My next move: google "yelp engagement rings in San Francisco"
Near the top of the list was Goldberry. I e-mailed Margie and before she even wanted to set up a meeting, she explained her philosophy and mode of operation. She is a designer who deals exclusively in perfect stones. The part that I really liked, is how she took the time to educate me on what exactly this means. Perfection on paper is just the first test that a stone must pass (D color, no fluorescence, Excellent cut/symmetry/polish). Then there was something that I had never heard of before, but really could relate to - light performance. In my opinion, light performance takes a rather subjective grading process and adds a very objective component. Most of you probably have never heard of light performance with respect to diamond quality, and I'll leave it to Margie to educate those of you who want to know more. Simply put, it is what makes one diamond out shine another even if the two receive identical grading reports on paper.
The bottom line: without prompting me, Margie had me pick between 4 diamonds (all perfect on paper). After examining them for as long as I wished, I chose one of the slightly smaller, less expensive stones because in terms of light performance, it clearly outperformed the others (even the larger ones). Margie completely agreed with my assessment. I can't imagine a salesperson at a larger jewelry store ever guiding you towards a less expensive stone if you had already told them you were willing to spend more (this really impressed me about Margie)!
The specs: 1.23 carats, D color, Excellent cut/symmetry/polish, No fluorescence (mounted in one of Margie's 4-pronged Tiffany settings - it really showcases the stone beautifully)
The result: My fiance said YES! She loves the ring! Her friends love the ring! Her mother, her grandmother, and my sister all loved the ring! I think you probably get the point.
My recommendation: if you are buying an engagement ring for the first time, or weren't satisfied with a previous result, AT LEAST talk to Margie at Goldberry as a next step. She won't sugar coat things and bend over backwards to earn your business. She will, however, commit to finding you a perfect stone (while working within your budget) if you are willing to put in the time and learn about the process. Honestly, it was time consuming process compared to walking into Tiff any's and leaving with that blue box (leave yourself at least a month to actually get the ring in your hand). But most important: 1) my wife and I own a perfect diamond 2) based on our recent insurance appraisal, we got a really great deal 3) I never felt taken advantage of (that is a huge thing for me when spending a significant amount of money)!
P.S. My fiance and I were so satisfied, we went back to Goldberry for both of our wedding bands and she lets us come by anytime we want to have our rings professionally cleaned!
best quality, great price – Margie has been in the business for many years, and is an expert when it comes to helping to choose the best stone at the right price. Top quality and design.
the place to find the best available diamond – What I found most important in my experience with Margie was her dedication to finding the best possible diamond ring for me. She is incredibly knowledgable about diamonds and has taught me that there is a lot more to diamonds than just the 4 ?C?s. If you and/or your fiance have looked at diamonds and they all look quite similar, you will likely not appreciate Margie?s expertise. But if you have noticed how some sparkle and dazzle more than others - you want Margie to help you find that special diamond. She is patient, very attentive to detail, and professional. She took the client service experience to another level with all of the time she spent with me. I had complete trust in her and am thrilled to have found a diamond with her that my fiance and I both love. While Margie does prefer D color diamonds and encourages them, I told her that I was perfectly fine with an F color and she was more than happy to find the best possible F color diamond for me. Yes, Margie is an interesting character and yes, she has her process and way of doing things, but if you want to find the best possible diamond ring at a fair price and feel very confident about it - she is the way to go.
Good experience at Goldberry – I found my way to Goldberry via online reviews, and went in with healthy skepticism (and plenty of anxiety about the whole process). Margie, who is quite a character, was very patient and helpful; she steered me in the right direction, and we ended up with a wonderful, non-traditional ring: 2.1 carat champagne yellow sapphire (natural, unheated) in a platinum band lined with D color diamonds. (And I promise I could never have quoted those specs before the Goldberry education.)
Fantastic -- Perfect Engagement Ring – Goldberry is fantastic. It is absolutely the place to go if you are looking for top quality designer jewelry. I recently purchased the perfect diamond engagement ring there. My fiancée loves it, can couldn't be happier. Princess cut D color, super sparkling diamond, with a unique solitaire setting -- unlike any other ring I saw anywhere in the city.
If you've been shopping for an engagement ring, you'll realize there is a bit of a tension of size vs. quality for a given budget. Choosing Goldberry, you are choosing to get the absolute best quality diamond within your budget (she sells only D color diamonds, as others have mentioned, and the diamonds have spectacular light performance). So if you want to flash around a ring that is heavy on the carats with lower quality diamonds (not a perfectly colorless D and/or lower clarity and light performance), then this is NOT the place for you (unless of course you have the money to get a lot of carats at of the highest quality). If, however, you want a truly brilliant stone, then Goldberry is the perfect shop. Just to be clear, though, Goldberry doesn't push quality on your for the sake of bumping up the price. Goldberry is honest enough to encourage their clients not to pay for something they don't need. For instance, at some point with the clarity is "good enough" (e.g., VS2) and the higher grades do not make a difference to the eye --- Goldberry doesn't suggest going above VS2 unless you really want to.
Based on my experience, here is a how the process should work for the first-time buyers like myself: You should shop around at the various large jewelry stores downtown (Tiffany, Cartier, etc.) to get an idea of what you and your fiancée like (diamond shape, setting, band, etc.) and to see what the market looks like for price / size / style / etc. Then, give Margie at Goldberry a call (she is by appointment only). She'll review everything with you, pointing out where the other stores are just trying to sell you. She's incredibly honest, direct and open -- for the amount of money you're spending, this is very comforting. After your initial meeting with Margie and armed with your inside kn owledge of the diamond business, you'll want to go out shopping again to finalize exactly the ring you want. From there, you will work with Margie to find the best possible stone in the market and to design the exact setting that you want. She will teach you a LOT about jewelry so you feel like you actually are making an informed decision. She has the finest of tastes, so you know that you are getting the absolute best quality on the market. Finally the piece arrives, and it is perfect! After that, cleanings are complimentary and she provides great post-purchase support to her clients.
From a design perspective, she has a great eye. She creates beautiful and unique pieces. If you're not looking for a traditional diamond, she specializes in color stones as well. Ditto if you're not looking for an engagement ring. I don't know much about these, but the rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. in her studio are stunning.
Margie puts an inordinate amount of time and care into each of her clients. I'm incredibly high maintenance when it comes to these kind of purchases; I do my diligence. I want to know every detail of the stone, the band, the purchasing process, the dealers, the diamond market, etc. We spent a number of hours on the phone during the day, in the evenings, and on weekends -- before I had even paid her a dime. Like I said, Margie is direct and honest, I never once felt as if I was being "sold" -- I can 't say the same for any other jewelry store in the city.
So, in short: If you want a top quality diamond engagement ring (but not overpay for it at Cartier), if you want to be a very informed shopper, if you want control over the design of the piece and selection of the diamond, the definitely go to Goldberry.
~MUST GO TO GOLDBERRY~ – Margie at Goldberry does an excellent job guiding you through diamond selection, whether you're new or experienced in buying jewelry. Great service, honest and straight shooting advice, incredible craftsmanship and artistry.
Sparkling now on a more than happy fiancee's finger... D color center cushion diamond, surrounded by D color diamonds in the band. "Bling, Bling"
Myself, I was new, and this was an excellent buying experience - just makes it easier to go back and buy more beautiful stones for my lucky gal.
Outstanding quality – If you're looking for a stone that is truly unique and of the highest quality, this is the place to go.
When I decided to buy an engagement ring for my fiance I had no idea where to start. I wandered into a couple of jewelery stores, I got the "Here's the biggest rock you can get for your money" routine and left feeling like the whole ordeal was kind of slimy.
Goldberry is a completely different experience. From the moment you walk in you can tell Margie's stones are top end. Even her platinum settings looked artisanal compared to what I had seen before. She was kind enough to walk me through her entire collection(when you make an appointment with her you are the only person in the shop), told me about the different properties of the stones, and answered all of my questions.
I originally thought I was going to buy a diamond. When I saw the quality of Margie's sapphires I decided that was what I was going to get (after dropping a hint with my fiance, of course). I went home and did some of my own research online and realized how rare some of the stones she has truly are. We ended up getting a certified unheated natural 1.7 carat powder pink sapphire in cushion cut. The color and sparkle of the stone is amazing. My fiance has met with Margie and Michel a few times to get her ring cleaned (a free service on Saturdays) and is equally impressed with the experience.
Goldberry is one of the places that makes living in this city so great, and I will be going back there for all of my jewelry needs.
Beautiful, Unique Jewelry at a Great Price and No-BS Service – When I decided to propose to my wife I stumbled across goldberry in a magazine (7x7) and didn't think I would be able to afford Margie's jewelry. Nevertheless, I gave her a call and scheduled to go in and have a look. Margie was straightforward and accommodating and made me feel at once that I was working with someone that would not mislead me or try to sell me low-quality jewelry. While I ended up spending slightly more than I originally intended, I couldn't be more happy with the value. Margie was able to get me a beautiful stone (pink sapphire) that we have both been very happy with and we learned a lot in the process--Margie gave us invaluable pointers on how to take care not only of the jewelry we bought from her but also of the we already had and spent a significant amount of time answering our questions, reassuring us, and making sure we got exactly what we wanted; she didn't waste my time and was generous with hers, but she also wasn't shy about informing me if she thought I was confused or asking her to do something that didn't make sense, a trait I found refreshing and helpful (and she was pretty much always right and definitely always no-nonsense). When we first went in we were considering several money-saving measures (lower-grade stone, white gold, among others) which we were able to see were not savers in the long run and we're now so grateful that we didn't choose lower-quality product in order to save a buck or two. We've been back since to have our rings cleaned and to have mine resized and she's always taken good care of us, not to mention Michel's attentiveness to the needs of my two-year-old the last time we were there. We plan to purchase additional jewelry from Margie in the future and would recommend to anyone that they do the same. Thank you, goldberry!
Unique exquisite jewelry – I was thrilled to get my ruby engagement ring from Goldberry, it's unique and stunning. The color is a gorgeous deep red which contrasts beautifully with the simple platinum setting. My fiance and I went in together to pick it out, because we wanted something other than a traditional diamond, and had a wonderful time talking wth Margie and learning about gems. The place is perfectly white and sparse, which makes the colors of the gems really stand out . Margie takes special care of the lighting too. It was a fantastic experience, I highly recommend Goldberry.
