Editorial Review for Trader Vic's – by Joanna Currier

In Short
The late Victor "Vic" Bergeron's first San Francisco tiki outpost was a sensation as soon as it opened in the '50s, sought after by the jet set for its stylish-yet-campy tropical ambience. Now a worldwide franchise, the restaurant's outpost in its native city appeals to a broader market with famous island-style drinks, pan-Pacific cuisine and cabana-style decor.

Know Before You Go

Night owls should hit the bar for appetizers, served 11:30am-12:30am daily.

What to Drink

Trader Vic is credited with inventing the Mai Tai (Tahitian for "the very best") here in San Francisco. Enjoy the famous concoction for only $5 during happy hour (Mon-Fri, 3:30-5pm).

We should have gone to Chevys next door. The place was dead and the service was rather slow. I'm not writing home about the food either. Pretty dry stuff for a place known for exotic flavor. I have been to some other Trader Vic's and this is the only one I won't be going back to. If that's what you want at night, go for it. Not for me. It will be torn down soon enough with a condo in its place. And oh yes, homeless people sleep outside and "releasing" near the entrance. Bon apetit.

Pros: There's alot of space, but when it's empty it's way too much.

Cons: I need a longer line to discuss the cons

two wines from list were not available...by that time we were into the main course...gave us free martinis instead....calamari was dreadful chewy and undercut.....my duck was try and without interest....we wife's beef was dry and tasteless.....only reason to eat here is proximity to opera or symphony....this has always been a last resort is other places (Hayes St, Absinthe, City Cake, etc. are booked)...Food at the opera house and symphony is better....too bad

Pros: none

Cons: all
