Oola

Late night dining in SOMA

  • Online reservations
  • American SF cuisine
  • Extensive wine list

Oola restaurant and bar is an American Bistro specializing in San Francisco cuisine. Classic cooking technique and preparation, utilizing the best the Bay Area has to offer. Oola features organic meats and produce, artisan cheeses and wines and a friendly knowledgeable staff with a passion for good service and good food.

A few menu items include seared spiced ahi tuna for $13, oysters on the half shell, $2.50 each, grilled all-natural creek stone farms hamburger for $10 and more.

Editorial Review for Oola – by Jane Tunks

The Scene
Open a heavy, two-story-high door on this desolate stretch of Folsom and find a welcoming blend of raw grit and modern elegance. Exposed-brick walls are juxtaposed with gauzy curtains that hang over each one of the three person-deep booths. A row of squat white-leather stools give a whimsical feel to the otherwise industrial-looking space.

The Food

A short-but-sweet menu is full of comfort food favorites pulled from many culinary traditions. The powerhouses of France and Italy are well-represented, with duck confit served with ratatouille and chicken under a brick garnished with sauteed broccoli rabe. Even all-American classics are celebrated, with a juicy hamburger gussied up with truffle cheese, and Northwestern-inspired cedar-roasted wild salmon. But the kitchen also dishes up a few of its own creations, like a tomato-based seafood chowder crowned with puff pastry. Skip the childlike desserts, like banana Oreo crepes, and get another cocktail instead.

A friend of mine took me to this restaurant, having heard great things about it. Recommendations were sadly WRONG. The food was mediocre at best; the wait staff was slow and unresponsive. After a $100 meal (for two) and generous tip (work was paying) we were asked to leave to make room for people with reservations. Then we had to ask AGAIN for our leftovers (for the dog), only to have them open several packages to identify which was ours. As we were leaving, I asked to speak with the manager, who when I explained our experience didn't even offer a "sorry". I do not have a single good thing to say about the experience.

I had heard great things about Oola so I was really looking forward to trying it out. Huge disappointment. Not only was the food over-sauced and overcooked (I had the ribs and they were fatty, over-caramelized leather strips), but the service was some of the worst I've experienced in San Francisco. For example, we ordered a bottle of wine and after reminding the waiter twice and waiting 30 minutes, they brought and poured us the wrong bottle. They forgot my friend's appetizer (soup), and when they finally brought it out they forgot the spoon which took another 10 minutes to get. The profiteroles were hard as a brick FROZEN (they don't even make them there). The waiter was rude to top it all off. In short, save your money and do not eat here.

Pros: Easy valet parking

Cons: Food, service
