The food is awful!. I have to wonder who wrote the reviews listed (was it the owners and staff??) b/c the food was some of the worst I've ever had. The Tiger Prawns had almost no flavor. The crab phyllo entree didn't taste like crab at all; more like a strange fish. My Mom ordered the salmon which I have to say was better than my crab dish but it wasn't good either. The food is very bland. My Mom isn't picky about food at all and she was very unimpressed. I went to Saha because of the good reviews on this site. We went on a Friday night and the entire time we were there only two other tables were taken. I was wondering why the place wasn't busy when we arrived and now I know why. I can't believe I paid $70 for such an awful meal! Service was good.
At Saha Food is Art and Dining is an Experience!. The dining room is beautiful and dimly-lit with a soothing red glow. The menu has an impressive selection of small plates, vegetarian/vegan selections, and seafood. Some favorites: Knaffe(sushi grade ahi tuna seared and crusted in phyllo shavings), Tiger Prawns in a rosewater, mint, and cilantro sauce, BBQ Tofu and Mushrooms, and the best Fattoush salad I've had in the city! To witness the ongoing creativity of chef Mohamed Aboghanem, try a daily special. I had an excellent mustard-lime marinated halibut filet over baby bok choy and spinach, with a persimmon salsa. I also loved the salmon baklava. The fava bean crostini was simple and beauiful: Crostini topped with a fava bean puree, accompanied by kalamata olives, roasted figs, or spanish white anchovies! The flavors are unique and amazingly combined in food that is divine!
User review by ipek_sarac. I've been to Saha several times. Everything here makes me come back for more! The food: creative, new, bold flavors... I love getting a couple small plates in the middle to share as apetizers, each one has something so unique. The fresh ingredients, interesting spices. It is the perfect place to have a long, relaxing, special dinner. The red room, the kilims on the walls, the beautiful pictures make it a very cozy and romantic place to dine. Last but not the least, the owner/chef and his wife are some of the best hosts I've ever met. Very warm, kind, and friendly. Don't be surprised if you find yourself chatting and drinking wine with them late into the night... Definitely go and share the experience!
World Class.. I looked up Saha on Citysearch for my friend's bachelor party dinner. I was very pleased with the ambiance, the quality of service and the food. Our waitress (chef's wife) was the sweetest and most professional I have seen in months. The chef creation dishes sounded a little exotic (chocolate sharmoula, orange scallops, etc) but ended up being so delicious. The wine selection was great and reasonably priced. All 8 guests in my party had an excellent experience. I would go back anytime!
Arabic fusion cuisine spun inside a charming Hotel Carlton setting..
The Scene
Beyond the hotel lobby is an elegant, rectangular-shaped dining room dominated by cherry red chairs, leather banquettes and candles flickering atop cream-clothed tables. A four-seat bar is tucked into a far corner. Middle Eastern music tiptoes through the space as light pours through a stained glass section of the ceiling, illuminating framed photos of Yemen and Tibet. Bubbly waitresses sport head-to-toe black with colorful waist wraps.
The Food
Chef Mohamed Aboghanem prepares the Yemeni cuisine of his childhood with a subtle Cal-European accent. Expect dishes that are simultaneously sweet and savory. Layers of flaky phyllo support an artichoke-spread pizza loaded with goat cheese, roasted figs and eggplant, while shredded phyllo is sprinkled atop sushi-grade ahi that's lightly breaded and complemented by a walnut relish. Enticing entrees include the "yemmy chicken" and the braised lamb shank that's intricately spiced with saffron, ginger and cinnamon. This gigantic on-the-bone offering looks like something Frd Flintstone would wolf down.
This restaurant deserves your attention!. I found Saha on Citysearch and was pleasantly surprised by the sensual ambience and quality of service. The food was AMAZING, and beautifully presented. I highly recommend the Talkin' Ravioli appetizer: the sauce was so delicious we mopped it up with bread after gobbling down the pasta. Even the music was luscious! This is such a romantic spot, equally perfect for a first date or a couple's night out.
Amazing experience. This is a definite for SF dining! Great ambiance, food, and service! My husband and I really enjoy dinners at Saha.
Yours for the taking!.
Going to Saha has provided us some of the most memorable and intimate evenings of 2004. From red-colored dancing to moving plates around the table....it feels exotic and refreshing. Mohammed is the chef of chefs....he opened a fine French red after a Xmas work party. mmmmm good! His wife, Marmee is featured in the art work on the walls and en vivo fills the room with warmth and serenity.
Go! Go alone or a deux! Did we mention the food??? It rocks!
What a Great Time.
I have dined with my boyfriend at Saha several times, and we have always been impressed with Mohammed's creations. On our first visit, my boyfriend (also a chef) ordered the tofu with red curry sauce, and he said it was the best tofu he'd ever had in his life--that the red curry sauce was truly a unique creation--a Yemanese delight.
On another occasion, we were blown away by the salmon crepes and the knaffe. The flavors are unique, distinct and the presentation is beautiful.
The ambiance of Saha is quite special, with photographs from Yeman, and also some really beautiful hand blown glass lamps. The wine list is impressive, and the service is excellent.
If you are looking for parking in the area, we always lucked out on two little alley streets just off Larkin, one is just north of Sutter, Stevenson St. They said they'll have valet parking soon.
Best Middle Eastern in San Francisco!.
My wife and I went to Saha last week and we loved all the flavors that were mixed together - savory, spicy, creamy, sweet.
We started off with the shiitake mango ravioli and the sauce was tangy, sweet, creamy and so full of flavor we ordered another one immediately! We also ordered the kofta, the meatballs were wonderfully marinated, spiced and browned.
For the main course, my wife had the Saha curry, the tofu was so sweet, spicy and savory paired with squash and mushrooms - we've never fought over the last piece of tofu every before! I ordered the lamb tagine which was succulent and soft.
The desserts were disappointing and unimaginative like the food, we are hoping they add some Middle Eastern-types of sweets to the menu! We'll be back!
