The Scene
Though no expense was spared when the St. Francis Hotel gave Michael Mina carte blanche to create his namesake restaurant, it still feels like a staid hotel dining room. Pillars punctuate the minimalist space, with widely spaced tables and neutral color scheme. Service shows growing pains--dishes can be given to the wrong diner and wine often arrives after food.
The Food
Diners build their own three-course menu, with each "course" offering three preparations of a theme element. Though some patrons may find the panoply of flavors akin to a culinary land mine, others will be dazzled by its unbridled creativity. Highlights include lobster salad with a trio of heirloom tomato seviches and Kobe beef rib roast played against truffle fries, horseradish-flecked mashed potatoes and a gooey Asiago potato gratin. Several of Mina's signature dishes from Aqua also make appearances, such as airy black mussel souffle and flaky lobster pot pie.

The service we received was fantastic! Every time we drank a little from our water glass they would come and fill it. The bartenders were very friendly and the hostess was nice. I tried the lobster pot pie after getting recommendations and it was amazing. The food is a bit pricey but worth it.

Michael Mina is one of my top 5 fav SF restaurants. You can chose 3 or 5 course meal. They offer a tasting style menu ie: If you order prawns for your main course, the chef will prepare prawns 3 different ways, if you order chocolate for dessert- they serve chocolate 3 different ways ie: choc cake, moose and ganache. So, you get to try lots of different things. YUM!!!

My boyfriend and I went to Michael Mina the last night we were in San Francisco. We were staying at the St. Francis, so we figured we had to try it. The meal cost us over $450 and was not up to par. The desert was the only good thing I really remember. Go only for the chocolate chip cookies. The next morning I felt horribley sick from it. Would not recommend going.
