Shafted @ Bistro – On 09.15.07 Saturday evening we walked in and were told it will be 45 minutes. After 40 minutes walked in to check again, we were told that he was sitting reservations first and did not know how long it would be. My wife and I had our cousin and 7 year old nephew out of town who's nuts about sushi. We were looking forward to this meal all day and had bitter sushi at the end.
Next time I would walk in, ask for phone number, call, make reservation in front of them and come back at the time I specified - it should be more reliable according to their rules. But I am never going back, probably better for both - them and us - we were to celebrate boy's early birthday, since we won't be there for the actual.
I can't believe I am still bitter about it... usually I am not... sorry. I would not have said anything if it wasn't for my nephew.
Oh Yeah!! – I LOVE this place! The fish is consistently fresh and delicious. Picking the next roll to order is always difficult, as all choices are great, but the Spicy Crunchy is my No. 1. Can you say Macadamia nut crust!!! I thought you could! I appreciate that this is not your typical sushi joint, after all it's got "bistro" in its name for pete's sake and reggae on its soundsystem. But I like that it's not one of the Clorox-reeking "authentic" fish slab places that one can find on many a block here in the city. Sushi Bistro beats the heck out of authentic!
After looking for parking for this long I expected better – The sushi is ok, but I felt like i missed something. The parking situation was horrible. If you think sushi is about rolls than go to this place otherwise find someplace else.
best sushi in san francisco – This is my favorite sushi joint in the city! The spicy tuna is like butter and i highly recommend the watermelon man roll. Bring all your friends and make a reservation! Enjoy!
Not up to the hype – My first visit was when the restaurant first opened. Since there was such buzz among my sushi loving friends, I went back. Both visits were disappointing. Kudos to the menu writer as the descriptions sound amazing however the execution is poor. We ordered a yellow tail & sea bass special roll from the daily menu - to our disappointment - the fish was cooked! No where was it indicated nor mentioned that the fish would be cooked in a sushi roll. The nigiri sushi had slabs (larger than usual slices) of fish, however the flavor & texture was not the best & rice (the true art of sushi) was non-descript. Dinner (all sushi w/1 small sake) was $100 for 2. So if huge pieces of fish = great sushi this is the place for you.
Spectacular service and sushi . . . seriously, it was super – Been to this place a couple of times, but my most recent experience is what prompted me to compose this review.
I went to Sushi Bistro with a group of 22 for my birthday (there are probably only 30 seats in the entire restaurant). From start to finish, the entire experience went flawlessly. My Girlfriend called for the reservation and was given no guff about the number of guests. The two of us arrived very early due to our combined nervousness about how the night would go, and we were seated at an empty table (just to wait) and offered drinks while we waited. We were seated (all 22 of us) within 10 minutes of our reservation time. Service at dinner was handled by one waiter who, despite it all, still managed to make everyone feel like they were being specially cared for. The food was spectacular although this is not the thrust of my review (if you haven't tried sushi bistro, do yourself a favor, and if you haven't had butterfish, do yourself another favor while your doing yourself the first favor). The waiter was fun and youthful, and even agreed to do a sake bomb with my group! Towards the end of our meal, the lights in the entire restaurant were dimmed while my complimentary green tea and vanilla/coconut ice cream with deep fried bananas dessert was brought out. I noticed that both the waiter and the owner were actively participating in the singing of the birthday song =). Afterwards, the bill came promptly and there were no hangups. All in All, a perfect 10 for service and experience (and seriously, the sushi is deeelicious).
If you live in the area (balboa and sixth) you probably already love this place. If you don't trust me that it is worth the trek out there. Try this place!!
Best Sushi I've Ever Had – I've been coming here since I moved to the city, around 2 years ago. The food is always top notch and they keep the menu interesting. Sashimi fans will not be disappointed - the portions of fish are huge and they are the freshest I've ever had. I recommend the Tuna, Albacore, Yellowtail, and Aji.
The rolls are creative and flavorful. I recommend the Watermelon Man, 49er Roll, C-2, Yellowtail Basil, and Stinky Salmon.
The people here are awesome, Xin the chef keeps me sitting at the Bar. Debbie and Dave are attentive and helpful servers. I couldn't imagine a better neighborhood sushi bar that I can go to whenevs. Yay!
Best Sushi in San Fran – Hip and Trendy Sushi restaurant. Amazing food, great music, and good saki selection. Great place to eat sushi and drink saki with friends. Fun and lively atmosphere, 10+++.
BEST SUSHI I HAVE EVER HAD – I live in Orange County, Ca and was in San Francisco visiting family. I eat sushi about three times a week at home. While in San Francisco we stopped by Sushi Bistro. This was by far the best and most creative sushi restaurant I have ever eaten at. From the sashimi to the elaborate specialty rolls, everything melts in your mouth. The sushi and service was so good we ate there the next night as well. I had to get as much of sushi bistro as possible before I went home!
Needless to say I will be eating there every trip to SF!!!
Great sushi, lovely presentation and excellent service – I found Sushi Bistro on Citysearch when looking for a place to take my sister on her birthday. I must say the most disappointing aspect was finding a parking place; then again, I would do it all over again to dine at Sushi Bistro. I found it hard to believe there were open tables.
The flavor combinations were delightful and the presentation was lovely. The staff made us feel at home and were quite attentive. My sister, who eats sushi every Friday night with her husband in Fresno, took a to-go menu to show him the taste treats.
