Best comedy in San Francisco. I had the most laughs and best time when friends took me to see Doug Ferrari & Friends on Wed. night at the Purple Onion. I didn't know an evening of comedy could be so much fun without costing a fortune. It was better than Cobbs, better than The Punchline and way better than what I heard at the Riviera in Las Vegas. I highly recommend this weekly Wed. night show to one and all. It begins at 800pm so is out early enough to go to work on Thu.
Jazz. The organ trio we saw at the Onion last Thursday night was incredible! Jack Tone Riordan was the guitarist and wow...wow...Don't know where his regular gigs are, but find him and go.
Legendary, subterranean North Beach comedy and performance venue has seen it all..
In Short
Barbra Streisand, Maya Angelou and Woody Allen have all performed here, which gives you some idea of the club's versatility. Opened in 1953, this North Beach basement hole-in-the-wall with brick-red walls (and traditional brick backdrop behind the microphone) continues to showcase all manner of international performers, from jazz to Robin Williams. The club was dormant from 1990 until the upstairs owners of Caffe Macaroni Sciue Sciue reopened its doors in 2004.
