Non Stop Bhangra night!. Came here last week for the Non Stop Bhangra night. 20 dollar cover charge is a bit steep. The Bhangra instructor was quite effective but the lesson was really brief. It was only about 30 minutes and only the very basic moves were taught. At the end of the night I didn't feel like I have learned much about the dance at all.

The music was fun. I have not been exposed to Indian Hip Hop much so I didn't know what to expect. The music was surprisingly easy to dance to.

The dance floor was really stuffy especially when after it got really crowded later the night. The water dispenser was a life saver.

Electro-indie-grrrl-pop bands, amateur burlesque groups and greasy haired hipster kids pounding corn dogs and Fat Tires? Just an average night at this Civic Center club.. For all-ages venues, this city offers slim pickings--fortunately, the under-21 crowd can enjoy live music and DJ'd dance nights at this Civic Center club, while those who are of age won't feel creepy, although they might feel a little square; the youngsters that show up here are definitely the cool kids. The dance floor is spacious and surrounded by a high school auditorium-style red curtain, and the crowd often swarms the stage--if they can't find a speaker or a counter to rock out on. The place is packed to the gills on show nights, everyone eager to catch the next big thing while they aren't really anything at all (past acts have included M.I.A., Silversun Pickups, The Pipettes, Scissors for Lefty and more). As for the bar, don't expect a huge selection, but because so much of the crowd is underage, you'll get your drink fast even when it's super crowded.

best sound and coolest atmosphere for live music. Ever since the owners picked up a fancy sound system last year, this place has become the best mid-sized club for seeing live music. Bands sound incredible. My musician supergeek knob twiddler friends speak highly of it. It's about the same size as the bottom of the hill or 12 galaxies, but it's prettier and more comfortable, and for big nights they have a coatcheck upstairs. And the rickshaws are way romantic. At least one of my friends inevitably ends up making out with someone when we go to one of the dance club nights. Fridays are almost too electro-80s scene-y but again, they're pretty reliable for both the dancing and the make-out factor. I like the room; it feels grand and exciting even though it's super chill and laid-back in there. I'm a sucker for high ceilings and giant red curtains though.

Bartenders with no sense of humor. I went in with some friends to hear the Dead Henson's play on a thursday night and at first we were having a great time listening to music that was way too loud (luckily we had ear plugs),having a good time laughing and joking around with each other and flirting with the bartenders. Well one in particular took things way too seriously when my friend asked him his name a little boisterously and kicked her out! I couldn't believe it! He accused us of being drunken & rowdy when we had only had 1 round of drinks and he was offended by her behavior. I will Never go back there and I suggest if you do go make sure you say your please and thanks you's and keep to yourselves as not to invoke the bartenders wrath.

The closest thing in SF to a kid-friendly bar. A pretty cool space with friendly bartenders and crowd. The last time I was there, a few toddlers were in the mix which made for an interesting hipster bar meets playground vibe. The drinks are well-prepared as well. This is a fine place to unwind after-work if you are in the Hayes Valley/Civic Center hood.

Before it blows up. This is my new favorite venue/bar. It's HUGE! Plenty of sitting/eating/chill space. Perfect for an after-work crowd that actually wants to hear itself think. In the day, Rickshaw is not too crowded or needlessly loud. But at night, it has potential to rock the hell out and please the crowd. The owners have created an intimate, loungy feel for folks who want to kick it and an in-your-face vibe for those who don't.

Totally fabulous. Cool vibe, great staff, variety of music, good bar food, lots of rickshaws and velvet curtains. Even foosball. Love the Three Kinds of Stupid happy hour on Wednesdays.
