The Scene
The hip East Asian chain imported its minimalist sensibilities to San Francisco's foodie mecca. The clean, modern space features a large exhibition kitchen and expansive glass display cases showcasing heaping platters of salads and snacks. Friendly counter people cater to a lunchtime crowd. Seating is limited to one long table and a few chairs against the bay window.
The Food
The streamlined menu of salads and lightly fried snacks based on local, seasonal ingredients are prepared in the Japanese tradition of sozai, or a meal made up of many different small items. A wonderfully textured salad of chewy hijiki (black seaweed), julienned fried tofu and plump soybeans flecked with spicy mizuna is refreshing, while nutty, creamy sesame dressing plays nicely against the crisp earthiness of green bean and carrot salad. Fried dishes are coated in delicate, nearly perfect panko crust, such as onion-flecked potato croquettes and juicy, tender sea scallops.

There are approx 4 seats by the window but you can take the food outside to eat and watch the ferry boats arrive and depart. The salmon and sesame genmai rice ball had tender, soft grains of rice interspersed with bits of smoked salmon. The combination sushi rolls were clearly different from traditional sushi rolls. The inside is full of lettuce rolled up with thin slices of salmon then wrapped with rice paper (similiar to Vietnamese cold rice rolls) , topped off with a bottle of jasmine iced tea, makes for a very nice lunch. The curry beef was tasty and had a lighter flavor than Indian or Chinese curry dishes.

I love their food! I've never got tired of their food. I love Hijiki (type of seaweed) salad, Shrimp croquette, Gobo roots salad, Curry, Tofu, and more. It is like a Spanish tapas. You try a little bit of evrhing and find out what you like.

If you want healthy Japanese food, then you must try this place! It offers bento boxes and very creative salads and crab cakes. They also serve a very traditional Japanese style curry, which usually is lighter and has a hint of apple flavor in it. Also their dessert custard is yummy as well.
