Editorial Review for 12 Galaxies – by Erika Stalder
The Scene
The entry and bar area seem lost in its ample square footage--lots of chair-less floor space and bare walls can leave a desolate first impression. However, just beyond the bar, this flavorless feel is quickly remedied with painted brick-red walls, steel accents and an intimate performance space surrounded by candlelit cocktail tables. Upstairs, an oblong balcony is flanked by alluring chill areas. One features a pool table, fireplace and red vinyl benches; the other evokes a more clubby feel with a full bar, table-and-chair seating and midnight-blue lighting.
The Draw
A shallow platform is all that separates rockers from gawkers, making this one of the city's best places for in-your-face-performances. Those unwilling to risk singer-spit contact can take to a nearby table or catch an aerial glimpse from the ample balcony; everyone is guaranteed a clear stage view. A generally relaxed and welcoming crowd varies, depending on the type of music being played.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoLocal and nationally emerging groups play rock, jazz, swing and blues nearly every night of the week. Show times generally start at 8pm or 9pm. A pool table and video games are also on site.
The ExtrasBar standards such as burgers, nachos and chicken wings can be ordered from the kitchen's walk-up window (Wednesday-Sunday, 6pm-12am). Jambalaya is a spicy departure from the norm.

12 Galaxies is a pretty nice place to see a show for small to mid-sized acts. The sound can be really good and the place is big enough that the main floor can be quiet while talkers can chat away at the bar or go upstairs. My biggest gripe with the place is the staff, mainly the bouncers. It seems that if there aren't any problems form them to deal with, they will start harassing the closest person. I've witnessed this several times. From calling someone a "gay" to grabbing girls' asses, these guys will do anything they can on their power tripped out shift and as soon as you ask them to leave you alone, they reveal themselves as staff and have you removed. Pretty nice huh? Staff person named Mike seems particularly meth'd up over a fresh shot of steroids. If the management can cage those animals back in the zoo, this would be a really great place.
