The Scene
With tattoo-inspired paintings and a battalion of haphazardly stuck band stickers, this gimmick-free Mission dive is ruled by all things rock. Bartenders pour more Pabst than cosmos, while sounds of Iron Maiden and Motorhead seethe between black-and-blue walls. Benders' bucks the trend of stylized lounges and exclusive bottle service with barroom basics like pool, pinball and visits from the tamale lady.
The Draw
The bar's no-frills approach attracts a crowd that prefers to be blinded by beer, not bling. Though trucker hat-wearing toughies are plentiful, an otherwise mixed crowd makes good use of the ample space. Extensive seating options--diner-style booths, dark alcoves lined with vinyl seats, bar stools--make it easy for patrons to create their own comfort zone.

A fire on June 10, 2006 gutted our beloved neighborhood bar. Luckily nobody was hurt physically, but the emotional toll is severe. Best of luck to Johnny and the rest of the crew. And like the proverbial phoenix, we hope Bender's quickly rises up from the ashes and is back in business soon.
