The Scene – In this bi-level space with a narrow mezzanine, diners are packed in like sardines, but no one seems to mind. Attractive staff work the dimly lit room, maneuvering tables, pushing aside dangling cylindrical lamps, ensuring that well-heeled locals are having a grand old time. – – The Food – The simple bistro menu has a few modern twists and turns, like quail slicked with teriyaki glaze, and earthy lentil salad lightened by crab and mango. Steak frites get a sun-dried tomato and olive sauce, and zippy pork tenderloin in mustard sauce is surrounded by a piped…
Editor's Tips
- Parking:
- There's a small lot adjacent to the building that houses Chou Chou.
- What to Drink:
- The wine list has a number of exorbitantly priced bottles, but there are a few standouts for less than $40.
Fantastic French Food !!

I have to say I simply LOVE this restaurant, one of the best French places I've ever dined. I was visiting San Francisco for a few days (from NYC) and took a shot at this place. From the outside it didn't look like much (especially since it was so foggy that night), but the inside decor was quite nice and there were a bunch of people inside so it put me at ease. My date and I shared the yummy Scottish smoked salmon, the delectable escargot, and the interestingly different and sweet homemade foie gras. The best part came when I ordered the scallops - they were hands down the BEST scallops I have ever tasted, and I still dream about them. For the dessert my date and I shared the floating island and a tart which were a nice end to our meal.
The service I also must note was just excellent. Our waitress was so polite and charming, we even got into a short conversation about NY. If I ever return to San Fran, I'm Definitely coming back to eat at Chouchou!!
They're not all they pretend to be.

Oh dear, so the Maitre d' kisses you several million times, so what? That's the least he could do after doing worse (you can imagine what goes here) and that came BEFORE the kissing.
We had arranged for a large dinner party, pre-planned, pre-arranged menu and everything else.
What we got was a completely altered menu, not what we agreed to, and what could we do? We had a large party and should we get all ugly and ruin our evening right then and there?
Watch out for this place. They're not all they pretend to be.

I?ve been here before and each time, I have had a very pleasant dining experience. On top of that, did you know this restaurant is teaming up with StreetSmart4kids? It?s actually really cool what they?re doing. I just heard about how SS4K is a nonprofit organization that helps underprivileged teens stay healthy. They are running their ?Dine Out and Donate? campaign here (as well as approx. 70 other restaurants in SF) during October and early November. After having a fabulous dining experience, just fill out the donation form when paying the check (minimum donation $3). This is perfect for people like me, who love to eat out all the time and also like to give back to the community. Check it out for yourself on the StreetSmart4Kids website!
Rude waiter ruins evening!

We were celebrating by birthday and chose ChouChou, a neighborhood French bistro. We had reservations although it was not necessary on a Monday night. We were greeted rather coldly and told to sit "where ever". Our waiter was rude and condescending. He suggested 2 different wines "if we didn't want to spend too much". When we checked the wine list he had suggested 2 of the most expensive wines, both over $70. When we didn't follow his advise and selected other wine he told us "That's awful......I wouldn't drink that!" His attitude ruined our evening. The $200 + spent and the treatment left a very sour taste for this restaurant.
Believing in second chances, I emailed the restaurant with my experience. I received no reply. Is this such a common occurance that they don't have time to respond to all the complaints? Perhaps they just don't care.
The one star is for the dessert which did match expectations.
If you want to dine at a lovely neighborhood French bistro try Chapeau on Clement. It is a warm hospitable enviornment with delicious food and a charming owner/chef.
Skip Chou Chou!
- Pros: parking lot
- Cons: rude waiter / poor wine choices
Great food and wine! Not too expensive - all good!

My friend recommended this restaurant.
The food was great especially the duck. Great wine and not too expensive.
When I'm back in SFO I will definitely go there again.
