Dressed up and modern, Quince has maintained the old-school feeling of the former Cathedral Hill location with the sleek and sexy feeling of the newer Jackson Square room. Carpet and soft surfaces keeps everything feeling relaxed as you eat your way through their impeccable menu.
Bad Customer Service with Average Food. My partner and I were visiting from out of town. I am from the bay area and wanted to take her to a romantic dinner in this lovely city. However, the minute we stepped in the door we were treated poorly. We had made reservations a month in advance and had received a confirmation/reminder from Quince two days before. When we arrived at our scheduled time, we were told we did not have reservations and were made to feel that we were intruding. We told the hostess about the confirmation call and she rudely asked, "Well, who called you then?" Being that it was already late in the evening and we were in town for only one night, we were forced to wait in hopes of eventually getting a table. As we waited for twenty five minutes, other parties were seated, given drinks during their waiting time and treated in a welcoming friendly manner. Additionally, there was an empty two seater table next to where we were forced to wait the entire time. Only when we were able to provide an actual voicemail from their reservationist, were they finally accomodating, seating us at the empty table by the door. Their once very rude hostess became apologetic and brought us a small complimentary glass of wine, however the evening was already tainted. The food was incredibly average and they neglected to let us finish our bottle of wine during our meal. Suffice it to say, San Francisco has many great restaurants, but Quince is not one of them.
In short, we've had better food for less money.
We started with an avocado and grapefruit salad. I hesitate to call it
a "salad" (as there were only 4 pieces of very thinly sliced avocado,
a few radish slices and a few grapefruit slices on the plate). It was
light and fresh.
The gnocchi was light and airy. The pesto was vibrant green, but the flavor was very
subtle. It was actually difficult to taste what the main ingredient
was because it was so mild. The paparadelle with short ribs was along the lines of most short rib dishes I've had, and the pasta was very apparently handmade.
The pork leg was tender, but the sauce would have paired better with beef. I had rabbit prepared three ways (in spinach puff pastry, as rabbit ribs and rabbit organs). The three preparations weren't very distinct from one another. My dish came to us at room temperature, so that wasn't helping matters.
We had to have dessert on our night out, so we ordered the milk
chocolate tart. It was good, not "OH, MY GOD!" chocolate bliss good,
but it was just "good".
I wouldn't have made the link to Alice Waters. We've
eaten at Chez Panisse, and we enjoyed that experience very much. I
still don't know what the hype around Quince is all about, but we can
check it off the list and say we tried it. The food is alright but
not a "must eat" kind of establishment in our opinions.
Best restaurant in San Francisco. I just returned from my reservation at Quince this evening and had such a wonderful time that I had to write about it. In my experience as a diner here in the city, and as a lover of fine food, I have never had such a relaxing and enjoyable experience as I had earlier this evening. Walking through the door, I felt like we were just welcomed into the home of the Chef and his lovely wife and were shown our table immediately. Promptly greeted by our server, and eyeing the dishes that were being enjoyed at the table next to us, we ordered quickly with recommendations, which we enjoyed immensely. After three courses of delicious food and a few bottles of excellently paired wine we left feeling like every penny was well spent and the service and attitude of the staff was above and beyond what we had expected. I strongly recommend dining at Quince, it was surely the best in my book and I am counting the days until I can join them for dinner again.
Fussy, Precious, Pricey - but good tastes. In general the tastes were good, sometimes creative, but occasionally offbeat (snails with mint - bad!). The duck and the coconut dessert were run of the mill, and portions of everything were small; dollars per ounce would really be high here. The service that others commend we found intrusive, people always hovering, trying to take dishes away before you're through (get more seatings that way), and the continual back and forth parade of staff was distracting and a little annoying. Nice people yes, but much, much too "present." Our first visit, with high expectations, and rather let down. Not likely to return.
From start to finish... Perfect!
The best service, food, decor in the city. This place beats a lot of the "bigger name" restaurants. Went July 6th for b-day, and everything was perfect. Details galore at this place. The entire staff seems to take pride in what they put out. Ultimately, the reason this place does so well has to be THE FOOD. Every course was amazing. You've all heard about their pasta... the spaghetti with cuttlefish ink sauce is a must try.
The wine list is great as well. Not too overwheming, and decently priced.
Overall... the best restaurant in the city.
Good, but pricey. I think it's a great restaurant, and it has really good food. But, it is just crazy expensive for what you get. It is certainly not worth the money. I went and I only ordered 3 courses (the pasta dishes are super small), and I left hungry. The quality is excellent, but be prepared to spend beaucoup bucks....
On my third visit to Quince I was very pleased to see that the impeccable service and attention to detail had not changed.I visit San Francisco 1 to 2 times a year and in the last couple years have kept revisiting Quince. I always leave counting the days when I can go again.
Although the menu at first was intimidating, the service staff is so passionate and knowledgeable that now returning, I feel at home with it. On my last visit I had the Wolfe Farm quail and something new for me, a Mariquita Farm artichoke cartoccio it was just heaven! The pastas are like nothing else I have ever had- one of my favorites is Agnolotti.
If you are looking for great food, ambience and a service staff that bends over backwards to make your experience unforgettable, you have to try this restaurant.
Best Restaurant ever!!!.
I have eaten here three times and it just gets better and better each time! Food is always impeccable, freshest ingredients, amazing flavors, and breathtaking. I love sharing several dishes with others in my party, especially since one look at their constantly changing menu leaves me wanting to try it all before it's gone!
I highly recommend the back farmhouse table for large groups. Service is impeccable, everyone being served the same course at the same time, even if it means five servers to help! The chef and his wife are very personable, wonderful people, and the servers are so knowledgeable! I would go back in a heartbeat! Oh, and do try their housemade beers!
Left Unhappy and Unsatisfied. Once is okay but twice makes you think that there is clearly something wrong. On both occassions we left unhappy (from the hostess to our server, not one was nice and inviting) and hungry (very small portions yet not a small plates restaurant).

When our table was late and champagne was offered for the wait, I thought that Quince was my new favorite restaurant. The early evening was wonderful. The service and exclamations of a menu which could benefit from a dictionary was excellent. The food was average for the price range. Then, our waiter absconded in the middle of the desert order without exclamation. He was curt when he returned and the service turned for the worse... to plunge into an abyss. The desert order was changed to due to a nut allergy at his suggestion, and the dish was laden with nuts. We were charged us for the nut-laden desert as well as the champagne offered earlier (perhaps we misunderstood the sentiment when it was offered?),
I am tempted try Quince again, but for >100 a person there are restaurants with better food and much better service.
