The Scene
Oyster fanatics snag a seat at the U-shaped bar, where they watch in awe as staff expertly shuck glistening bivalves over mounds of crushed ice. Commuters and tourists sit at one of the handful of tables overlooking the bay, while convivial T-shirt-clad servers suggest menu choices along with wine pairings.
The Food
The short menu showcases the local oyster farms' pristine bivalves and manila clams in mostly classic preparations. Fresh oysters shimmer with freshness, tasting like they've just been plucked from the sea moments before. A mixed dozen features Hog Island's signature plump Sweetwaters, briny Atlantics and sweet kumamotos, giving purists the chance to compare the flavor profiles of several raw varieties. The Hog Wash, a classic mignonette updated with fresh cilantro and rice vinegar, is a match made in heaven with freshly shucked oysters. Cooked dishes include Sweetwaters baked in creamy beurre blanc and the traditional oysters casino, studded with smoky bacon.

Hog Island Oyster Co has the freshest oysters I have ever eaten. The eatery in the Ferry Building is small with only a counter and a few tables inside and out. But that is just enough. We also order the steamed baby clams and a grilled cheese sandwich made with cheese from Cowgirl Creamery. These two along with the oysters make a wonderful lunch for our family.

We had lunch here the last time we were in San Francisco, and ordered fresh oysters, of course. These oysters were the freshest I have ever tasted, and each bite tasted like the sea. We sat outside, and had the magnificent view that the Ferry Building offers. All in all, it was an enjoyable relaxing delicious experience which I wouldn't mind repeating in the near future.

This restaurant is in the Ferry Building, which is a treat in itself. After wandering through, stop here and sit at the bar. You can look out at the bar while you have a pint and some of the freshest oysters ever. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.
