Editorial Review for Conservatory of Flowers – by Gina Goff
In Short
Originally erected in 1879, this striking conservatory--a gem of Victorian-era architecture--is the oldest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Although the glass building miraculously survived the 1906 earthquake, it was closed in 1995 due to wind damage. Following a $25 million renovation, the landmark reopened in 2003 with four garden rooms housing more than 1,700 species of plants, including endangered tropical forest flowers from Borneo to Bolivia.
