Editorial Review for Rogue Ales Public House – by Kevin Raub

The Scene
Despite being a major advertisement for Rogue Ale (Rogue art, merchandise and award certifications pack the place), the atmosphere lends itself to the ultimate beer experience. The decor rides the fence between modern city pub (exposed-brick walls, attractive servers) and country speakeasy (antiquated carpet, a giant mural). The crowd leans towards beer hounds, especially at the bar, but novices will feel right at home. Service in the elevated room or the private space adjacent can be unattentive.

The Draw
There are more than 15 types of Rogue beers on draft here, as well as a host of amped-up bar food, complete with pairing suggestions. Patrons can sample eight beers for $10, so dive right into such oddities as Smoke Ale and HazelNut Brown. Dead Guy Ale, however, is probably the most accessible. Typical cocktails and hot chocolate are available to boot.

Great beer lover haven in North Beach are - excellent selection of Rogue ales and paraphenalia available, also very good list of rotating guest beers. Our experience service wise was very good, we wandered in on a Sunday afternoon, the place was pretty full from a Washington Square festival crowd, and we had no problem getting seats and refills for the next couple of hours. Our server was always around before we emptied a pint, and had good info on the available beers. Didn't eat there, but then we didn't go there for a full meal. Recommended.

Pros: Good beer bar

Cons: Line at bathroom from good beer

Filthy Kitchen and obnixious bartenders. This is the only place in the neighborhood which does not take care of the locals. We sat at the bar for 15 minutes and watched the bartender chat with his friends before he taking our drink order. Would like to say this was an isolated incident, but is not the case. Stumbled into the kitchen on one occasion and it was absolutely filthy. Will not order food there. This is unfortunate because this is the only place in the area to have bar and grill food.

Cons: Bad Service, Filthy Kitchen

Editor's Review

This North Beach brewhouse is equal parts modern city pub and country speakeasy, suitable for both beer snobs and casual drinkers.  See the full editorial review.
