Sit at the bar!. Oak City is a great neighborhood restaurant. We have been going for years, and are regulars. We like to sit at the bar and eat as do many other people. Most of the people who sit at the bar, eat at the bar. Some won't eat there if they cannot sit at the bar. It is great fun and you get to know a lot of people. One of the reasons we keep going back is the food. It is always delicious and the chef's specials are wonderful. Try it, and sit at the bar!
Upscale, but not over the top. Oak City caters to the somewhat prosperous business comunity, and does a good job. Wood fired pizza, duck, pasta, all well done in a reasonable atmosphere. If you never leave the house in jeans, drive a boxter, get your hair cut every 3 weeks, and like decent taste, this might just be your place.
average food.
The service and ambience at Oak City is wonderful. The staff is attentive but not overbearing. The room is elegant and quiet enough for conversation.
But the food is just average, at least for lunch. It's not bad, just nothing special. I had cornmeal crusted calamari ($8), which was tender and not too chewy. I also had the portobello pizza with truffle oil ($9). There was literally one slice of portobello on each slice of pizza. Most of the entrees were around $9-10 at lunch.
It's a fine neighborhood restaurant but nothing to go out of your way for.
Upscale, romantic destination for creative comfort food is perfect for either a date or a business meal..
The Scene
This casually elegant restaurant, with open-beam ceilings, large exhibition kitchen and simple mural of an oak tree dominating one wall, is as comforting as the food it serves. The quietly efficient restaurant appeals equally to business diners and couples out on date night. The service is friendly, efficient and professional.
The Food
The menu focuses on all-American favorites found at mom-and-pop joints across the nation. But this restaurant takes such comfort staples as meat loaf and roasted chicken and adds some contemporary razzle-dazzle. The iceberg wedge salad expertly matches that most American of greenery with creamy avocado, ripe cherry tomatoes, smoked bacon and rich basil-buttermilk dressing. The burger is dense, succulent and topped with thick white cheddar cheese and grilled red onions. The signature dish is, not surprisingly, the mac and cheese gratin, which melds three types of cheese into a gooey pasta dish that kids of all ages will adore.
