Editorial Review for Sonoma Coast State Beach, Bodega Dunes – by Mitchell Anderson

The View
Threaded tenderly between the chaparral-covered bluffs and the craggy coastline is a fantastic expanse of migrating sand dunes and seaside tranquility. Below the protruding, westward facing cliffs are small, isolated coves. With a five-mile trail system in the dunes and an abundance of natural arches, reefs and tide pools, this state beach is an adventure waiting to happen.

Features
Set slightly away from the beach amid coastal cypress trees, the campground offers 98 sites for tents or RV's up to 31 feet long. Among the amenities provided are picnic tables, fire grills and piped water. Bathroom and laundry facilities, as well as horse rentals are available within one mile.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

During the winter, Bodega Head is arguably one of the best sites to whale-watch on the north coast. Though a seemingly perfect place to let pets run wild, animals must remain on leashes.

The Extras

Make reservations in advance, as campsites fill up very quickly.

Editor's Review

Vast, rugged and supremely exposed to the elements, this Northern California beach is an unsheltered, sandy wilderness.  See the full editorial review.
