Good Food But Also A Little Too Pricey and A Very Rude Waiter. I went to LuLu's last night for the first time and my experience was quite mixed. The ambiance was great and the food was very tasty. We ordered the antipasti and steak, both of which were flavorful and delicious. Also, as has been said, their wine selection is great. The wine recommender gave us good suggestions and was very friendly. On the negative side, I felt that although the food was good, it wasn't worth the extremely inflated price. Additionally, our waiter was often late with the food and made a very rude remark toward the end of our meal when he saw that we had "only" tipped 15%. When you're paying $70 per person, I'd say 15% isn't bad!
Super Ugly and Rude Restaurant.
Save your time and money somewhere else!
Beware of this ugly spot and their rude and sugar coat service.
Will never to LuLu any more!
Very Ugly, Evil and Rude.
Not worth the Drama. As an event planner for one of the bay area's largest pharmaceutical companies, I have the opportunity to dine out several times a week. My most recent visit to Lulu left me wondering how a restaurant could be in business for so long, with so little understanding of customer service. My date and I received the worst service ever, topped off by over cooked food and inflated price tags. They do have quite an extensive wine list, but a lot of good that does when they are out of your first 3 picks. This might be a good spot for visiting tourists and business people trying to escape Moscone Center's sandwich bar, but I would hope the locals realize that lack of attention to service is no longer accepting in this city.
Wonderful Food, Good Wine Selection, Loud, Friendly Atmosphere. Love their pizzas! And the flights of wine usually feature wines you'd like to try. This is a great place to meet friends for dinner and a drink. The menu has enough to please just about everyone, the room though large and loud, is pleasant, the service is usually quite good and can be excellent, and they serve food family style so it's easy to share. This is another perfect place to wind down on a weekend afternoon, or a great place for a light supper and a glass of wine after work.
Excellent Service, Shining Food.
It seems people can't help but having strong reactions to this restaurant!
Not easily put off by warnings of "rude" staff, I decided to try this restaurant out despite some unsavory reviews I've read. If "rude" means the staff isn't docile or there to stroke the egos of the guests, then perhaps they are a bit rude. But if rude means they are pedantic or incompetent in reference to the menu and extensive wine list, then they certainly are not.
Our server not only gave us incredible recommendations off of a very intimidating wine list (allowing us to sample grapes and styles unfamiliar to us), she also navigated her way through the menu with ease and command. She seemed to give very honest opinions about the food, what not to miss. We listened and enjoyed the food tremendously. Pan roasted mussels, fresh garlic and goat cheese ravioli, delicious duck from the rotisserie, meyer lemon cheesecake-- everything perfect.
Management graciously came by and inquired how we were enjoying our evening, the waitstaff seemed to be very comfortable in the restaurant and very confident at their tables, the food was fresh and prepared perfectly, wine was outstanding. We really had a great experience.
It is too bad these other folks have had unpleasant reactions to LuLu, because I can attest-- a very wonderful evening can certainly be had at this San Franicisco gem.
HEED THE WARNINGS.... This many negative reviews cannot be wrong! I wish I had read them before I embarked on my unsavory dining experience. LuLu is still a busy restaurant, quite often actually, but I cannot for the life of me understand why a person would return to this establishment a second time. The staff is rude and unhappy. Whats even worse is that the management is so unfriendly and unaccommodating you'll spend your dinner trying to figure out why they work there when they appear to hate their jobs so much. Some menu items satisfy, but the majority of the dishes are way overpriced for their miniscule size and either over or under cooked. Again, heed the warnings and spend your well earned money at another restaurant.
Skip It. If you are in to slow, rude service, and below average food and drinks at above average prices, this might be the spot for you. I really don't see the attraction to this place. After a lengthy wait (told 'your table is being cleared' when there were clearly plenty of tables open), it took 15 minutes to get drinks ordered, and when they finally arrived, one was wrong, and they were both small and weak. After flagging down the waiter, he recommended pizza (below average at best) and fresh fish of the day with fresh vegetables. The nickel size piece of fish arrived severely over cooked with quite the combination of fresh 'vegetables' (lima beans, Greek olives, sliced tomatoes, cheese, and a hard boiled egg). I guess they ran out of fresh vegetables? The waiter disappeared after taking the order, and I had to grab the busboy to get more water, and the bill. Do yourself a favor before going to Lulu, find another restaurant for the evening. However, if you must go here (there were a lot of large groups), significantly lower your expectations and prepare to open your wallet for the privilege.
Looking for torture on Folsom....
The Folsom street fair comes along once a year. A time to witness leather clad couples exchanging numerous forms of torture right in the middle of Folsom street. If your taste for torment for the year wasn't filled at the fair you can always wonder down to Lulu at 816 Folsom anytime!~
At Lulu they truly excel at giving you painful evenings. They start off by luring you into their tasteless establishment with smells of wooden fires. They then embrace this tasteless interior with a crew connected together with headsets that remind you of fast food drive through windows. As agonizing as that seems the punishment only furthers.
As the meals arrive on top of k-mart tableware, the first taste lets you know what is soon to come. Boring meats, overcooked veggies, and old pasta come together to give your stomach a quite unique sensation, one you'll soon remember for a week! Lulu leaves you with an aching in your stomach days after you're done and a reminder of why you should never return.
If you do plan on coming to Lulu for a painful experience I would suggest you save your money by politely asking the angry valet to strike you in the stomach. You'll achieve the same feelings this way without wasting your time.
A+ in Cutomer Dissatisfaction..... My story might be an odd one, but one worth sharing. See, I never actually got to dine at LuLu on my last visit because they were closed for a private party. Unfortunately, that factor did not shield me from an encounter with their sarcastic, rude and completely unprofessional management and staff. My date and I were allowed to enter the restaurant with no notice that they were shut down for the evening. We were later pointed towards a sign that was as big as a post it note - on the backside of the front door, facing the wall (nice place for it). When we were finally spotted at the bar, we were addressed as if we were trespassers on private property. Then, the hostess rudely told us that we had to leave right away because of a private event that was about to begin. She even went as far as asking us how we got in. This was after we were already served a beverage at the bar. Unacceptable behavior on all counts. I had suggested this venue as one of my favorite spots for this first date. Needless to say, I was left with egg on my face.
Sadly, after 10 years as a faithful customer, I have to retire my recommendation. I have been entertaining client groups here for years, but recently I find that the wait staff is unpolished, and the management seems inexperienced and unprofessional in responding to customer concerns. The food is still good, but let's face it, food isn't quite as tasty when you are recieving bad service. As well, I agree with an earlier reviewer -- the restaurant needs remodeling. All in all, I get a sense that the wonderful staff the restaurant had 'once upon a time' has moved on to nicer restaurants.
I won't be back.
