ummmm.... i am not sure what all the hype is about, but i went for lunch not dinner maybe that makes a difference. i had the specialty the piperade (saw it on Check please, bay area) and for the life of me dont know what people like about it. an egg over carmelized red peppers and onions with flakes of prociutto....ummm shouldnt there be something else? my friend had some thing that looked like pot roast and tasted like tough meat...but the staff was friendly and seated us even though we didnt have reservations so that was nice
Very Disappointing.... There has to be better restaurants in San Fran than Piperade.
I wish Piperade was in the neighborhood I live in. We went to Piperade and immediately wondered why we had never been before. The service is prompt and friendly, and when there was a problem with our order it was fixed quickly. The food was both approachable wonderful, I would love for this place to be next door. If you are looking for high art dining, try a different spot, but if you are looking for a great meal in a comfortable and relaxing environment this place is great. I recommend it as a fantastic first date spot as well as a place a couple can go to time and time again.
Order and Autumntini!!!. Love Piperade! Great food, wonderful staff, and a lovely space. The small plates are great for sharing and the cheese plate I recently enjoyed was a HUGE hit. Lots of seafood dishes (my lunch buddy liked the prawns a lot). Brandon the Bartender is a wonderful guy and a great mixologist! Ask him for an Autumntini- Delish!
Great Ambience & Great Food!. My boyfriend and I both love the food here. It's nice presented and has great taste!!! I can't tell the difference between Basque with French but they definitely satisfy my tongue! Romantic ambience with great wine list, highly recommand for dates!
Wonderful Basque Eats. We didn't even need to order the large plates. We sat at the bar and just had several generous-size tapas that were all incredible. Can't wait to go back!

Wood beams lining the low ceiling and floor impart a rustic ambience to this cozy spot. Despite having few windows, the dining room is saved from gloominess by flickering votives, a brightly back-lit bar and a mixed crowd of food lovers packing in nearly every night.
From small plates to large, Chef Gerald Hirigoyen proudly proclaims his Basque heritage in delicious tones. Despite assertive ingredients, Hirigoyen's delicate touch is evident in every dish, from perfectly sauteed sea scallops balanced with spicy chorizo, sweet apples and peppery arugula to moist, steamed snapper in a mouth-puckeringly tart garlic vinaigrette. A richly satisfying terrine features smooth, creamy cheese layered with Serrano ham. Signature piperade is an enticing stew of bell peppers and onions layered with ham and a poached egg--worth every bite.
Go to Fringale instead. Piperade is okay. Nothing spectacular. I was really excited to dine here, as I love the owner's other restaurant, Fringale. Sadly, I was disappointed. I felt like there was a void in the menu. Every entree seemed very heavy on olives. The small plates were good--cheese tray (yum) and the croquettes were great. My sole was a miss--very olivey. Strong odor. Disappointing. Take my advice--go to Fringale instead. You'll love it!!

Unique and delicious!. The food was some of the best we've had in a long time. Add to that the nice ambience and the easy dinnertime parking (a unique SF experience in itself!), and you've got yourself a winner. Service was fine, though a bit aloof. Can't understand the comments from a couple of users in this review: it's Basque cuisine -- ham, anchovies, cheese --so expect salty and oily. If you don't like those things, then stay away.
