Tips for Louie's California Chinese

April 26, 2006

Chinese with a California twist and a casually elegant atmosphere characterize this North Beach establishment.. In Short
A front bar gives way to a dining room punctuated by shoji screens and emerald green rugs. Patrons dine on little delights like pot stickers, steamed pork ribs and mango pudding during daytime hours. The evening menu mixes traditional Cantonese dishes and seafood like steamed lobster and smoked sea bass with more unusual offerings like superior winter melon soup. The wine list includes a good selection of California varietals.

highly overrated. As a Chinese food lover, I feel compelled to disagree with the glowing reviews posted so far. The food was not fresh (obviously frozen seafood), portions are small, and the flavor was bland in three out of four dishes. Only the braised pork shank was authentic, unusual and excellently prepared.

The main dining room looked like a large basement. The service was terrible. Despite telling our waitstaff several times we were in a hurry, our food took a very long time to arrive at the table and no one seemed to make an effort.

Yummy Upscale Chinese Food. What a great new place! Especially for a birthday party or group of people since they have the coolest private rooms. Innovative food, cool decor & great service. Not your typical Chinese Restaurant, definately a keeper!

Finally! Upscale chinese but not pricey.. Walked in to Louie's and you can tell the different. A very nice dinning room and the food was great! It doesn't look and taste like any other chinese restaurant that I've been to. The server and the manager were so attantive, they took their time to go through the menu with me and my girlfriend which they also suggested the dishes to go along with one another. I am looking forward to go there again!
