A small Mexican restaurant in the Mission with a devoted following..
In Short
This beloved, bare-bones storefront in the Mission caters to the neighborhood's mix of Latino families and budget-minded hipsters. The jukebox blasts Mexican pop music while soccer games air on the TV. The traditional menu includes main courses such as chicken slathered in rich chocolate mole and cheese-stuffed chili rellenos fried to the slightest crunch. Generous portions of rice, refried beans and piping-hot tortillas are served with all entrees.

Chava's is an EXCELLENT Mexican restaurant!.
I'm from LA, where the Mexican food has some distinction from restaurant to restaurant and you can get more than just burritos and carne asada. Chava's is a real Mexican restaurant that serves real Mexican dishes like Chilaquiles, Menudo, Mole, and Machaca--all with excellent results.
This is a crowd pleaser for the more conservative pallets who just want their food clean tasting and free of bugs to the souls on a quest for the perfect tamale.
Downsides: the place too often has music blaring and the fluorescent lighting is oppressive.

Authentic Jalisco Cuisine.
Excellent Birria, Pozole and other Jaliscan dishes. Hand made tortillas and hefty portions.
