Not as good as it used to be.
The last 3 times I have eaten lunch here I have been disappointed. The tuna sandwich came without the carmelized onions and the mixed green salad with mozzarella and chicken came dry (as in an absence of salad dressing)!!! Not sure if there is a change in the prep team or what, but please! Opening your lunch back at the office only to discover missing ingredients stinks!
Food vs. desserts.
I would give it a much lower rating for the food, but a very high rating for the desserts/cakes. The sandwiches are expensive and greasy. The proscuitto is sliced way to thick. I had the mushroom quiche & it was full of thick, woody (hard) mushroom stems. They way overdress the salad that comes with it.
However, the cakes are THE BEST. I order cakes regularly for office celebrations and we can't get enough (or have enough excuses to celebrate)! they're beautiful, delicious, moist, not just sugary, but tasty!

Working as a concierge at a major Union Square hotel, I am always scouting new places to dine. Enter Cafe Madeline! My favorite is the creamy St. Andre cheese with juicy pear slices and candied, crunchy pecans. The sandwich is served on a fresh potato dill roll. A mini salad accompanies the sandwich which has a tangy viniagrette. Also, there are a wonderful selection of quiches. The outdoor seating is great on nicer days. The cafe itself is a bit too busy and small to enjoy myself. A great option is to get your food to go and enjoy it on the Square! Bon apetit!
