Tips for Sushi Rika

Rika Reconnaissance. My friend and I hiked up the hills of SF to go have good sushi that was highly rated by other reviewers on citysearch, but to our dismay we were extremely let down. It was a cold rainy day and the restaurant had no heat (we were told that by the waiter and Sushi Chef.), the sushi rice was hard as if it had been sitting in the kitchen fridge for a few days and the fish, although fresh seeming had no depth of flavor which was also a sign to me that the fish may have been fresh on Tuesday but was only okay on Thursday and was served anyway.

Totally Mediocre. My boyfriend and I are big sushi-a-holics. Since we were going to a show at the Masonic Center this evening, this restaurant?s proximity was ideal and the rating, a Citysearch 9, this must be a good place!, was enticing. What a let down! The rolls are creative looking I grant you, but the fish was completely average, and all the crab was cut with mayonnaise (If the menu had hinted at their mayonnaise propensity, I would have steered clear of those rolls). We also had a cucumber salad that tasted off and some agedashi tofu that was dressed with copious amounts of raw ginger. I love ginger, but it was hidden under a mound of bonito flakes. Getting a mouthful of raw ginger when you weren't expecting it is just flat out gross. All in all, I would be impressed with this restaurant if it were in the middle of nowhere, but San Francisco has far superior sushi establishments on offer. No need to patronize a totally mediocre one.

Editorial Review. Large groups and couples alike can enjoy Japanese cuisine, including sushi, teriyaki, tempura and more with wine, sake and beer.

perfect for late nights. pretty good sushi, a huge variety of rolls and house specials. the best thing about this place is that they are open until 2 am on weekends!

Great sushi, good value, good service. My girlfriend and I were frequently eating at Tempura House on Powell, never really noticing Sushi Rika a mere 2 blocks away. But now that we've tried it, we won't go anywhere else in the area for sushi.

The rolls are excellent, and there are so many good ones to choose from. Prices are reasonable, and considering the quality it's a great value. We especially like the Swabble roll, and the Mountain Fuji is quite tasty as well. And as another reviewer pointed out, the seared tuna salad is worth trying. You can see their whole menu at their website, sushirika dot net (I guess CS doesn't let you put in websites?).

Sake and beer are standard prices, the shochu cocktails are pretty good. In the three times we've been here, we've had consistently good service.

The only disappointment is some of the cooked food. We ordered a dinner platter for two, and most of the cooked stuff was just not good. Other reviewers have noted this too: just come here for the sushi!

About the free parking: you have to look for a sign on the corner of Bus(h) (CS finds a lot of words inappropriate!) and Taylor, call the number and have them open it. Kind of a pain, but still it's nice to have free parking.

Artsy Sushi. The house special roles have complex flavors and are great if you're looking for something different. I would stick with the roles in general, as the rest of the food is not as good. If you're alone, sitting at the bar gets you fst friendly service. Nice down tempo music, ambient lighting, and friendly service. Not cheap, but worth the price.

GREAT ROLLS!. Whenever my boyfriend is in town we have to go to Sushi Rika. They have great creative rolls! I recommend eating directly at the sushi bar.

creativity and flavor. this is my favorite sushi restaurant in the nob hill area. it's not the closest to me, but it's the best. creative rolls, fair prices, nice house music... all these things make it worth the walk up the hills on bush street! there is a seared tuna salad that is also awesome. good, well-priced sake as well. friendly staff. there is enough variety on the menu for anyone to eat there regularly and not get bored. nice work!

Good Rolls bad tempura. We went there twice, from Japanese point of view, Tempura and Yakitori are horrible!

but we liked the sushi rolls, especially the one Unagi is inside. for other sushi was so-so.

We'll go back there because it has parking and open late but never order other than sushi rolls.

Horrible Service and Too Much Rice on the Rolls!. My friends and I decided to come here after reading all the positive reviews. We were highly disappointed. First of all, where's the fish?!?! The sushi rolls we ordered had little fish. If you love to eat rice, then you're ok. It's pretty sad when the taste of rice overpowers the taste of the sushi... Next up, the service. We had horrible service. We ordered a total of 8 rolls. We received only 6. When we inquired about the final two, the waitress informed us that she forgot to write it down and that it would take 5 minutes for them to come in. After 15 minutes, we still had no sushi. We cancelled the remaining 2 orders and asked for the check. They made no attempts to make amends. All she could say was that she was sorry... well, I'm sorry that I ate at this place... HORRIBLE!
