In Short – This storied museum, founded in 1895, was reborn in a new facility after its previous incarnation was irreparably damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. With an ultramodern design spearheaded by renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog and de Meuron and San Francisco's Fong and Chan Architects, the new look includes a piece by Andy Goldsworthy at the entrance and integrates the sleek building with the surrounding landscape. (The copper exterior will eventually fade to a dark green.) The museum has also bolstered its collections of 17th-20th-century American art and the art…

Exhibits Not Suitable for Children---
I would like to warn parents about the obscene and degrading content of the Gilbert and George exhibit at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, particularly as it relates to the inappropriateness for the viewing of underage children. It is advertised as "Art For All" with colorful images of the artist's most tame work. Beware! This is not your garden variety artistic clothing optional and strong language, it is predominantly made up of degrading and obscene images. The museum is taking the stance that it is up to the parents to decide, yet the parents are not being properly informed in advance.
The museum has informed me that anyone who is offended at all by the Gilbert and George exhibit is entitled to a full refund, including the day?s expenses at the museum and a 6 month extension for members. We have also gone to the museum twice more and interviewed 20 people and museum employees, and the response was unanimous. This show is not suitable for children.

De Young Museum - great Saturday afternoon hangout
by perica73 at Citysearch
My husband and I recently visited the De Young museum to see an interesting display of 70 - 80's fashion done by Vivienne Westwood. Her work was intersting to say the least, but equally as interesting was the museum itself. From and archetextural standpoint it looks like something from Star Wars on the outside, but yet very modern and tastefully decorated on the inside. It was easy to get around to see all of the exhibits and the staff was very friendly and helpful. If you wish a visit a museum like none other we would strongly recommend this one. They have a wonderful gift shop with minature pieces of art that can be found in the museum as well as a mix of all kinds of interesting knick nacks, books, coffee mugs accessories, etc.
To our surprise they also have a very nice dinner located towards to rear of the museum that in addition to indoor seating has a nice lawn to spread out on and have a picnic and take in the sun. The surrounding are lush and beautiful as it's located in the middle of the Golden Gate Park.
We noticed that several people ride there bike there and have picnics after going through the museum. This is a great place to just relax, unwind and enjoy on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
- Pros: nice atmosphere, service, food
- Cons: underground parking gets pretty full on weekends
