The Scene
After relocating to the Mission in 2001, owner Alan Beatts set out to make his science-fiction, horror and fantasy bookshop a beautiful, welcoming space. The hand-hewn
bookshelves, leather chairs, Tiffany-inspired directional lights and huge antique rugs give the wide, elegant room the feel of a manor house library. Cozy couches by the back window are a perfect browser's nook, and if you're very lucky, you'll get to pet the hairless shop cat, Ripley.
The Goods
An excellent selection of new and used titles, from classics by Ray Bradbury and Phillip Dick to the staff's selections of prime contemporary work. Used books are typically half the cost of retail, with some real rarities on hand. You'll find boxed gift editions of the Harry Potter books and the "Chronicles of Narnia," and a whole shelf of Lovecraft-related volumes. The genre magazine section is strong, with local editors often hosting events at the store. It also carries limited edition self-produced chapbooks.…
